Makeup can be intimidating, especially for beginners. Factor in the cost of dozens of products and the time it takes to put on a full face of makeup and it’s easy to understand why some people—especially travelers—prefer to skip it altogether. For people like me who can't be bothered with a complicated makeup routine but want to look good anyway, though, there’s an answer. And it won’t take up much room in your suitcase .

Clean beauty company Ilia's lineup of products seem made for travelers packing light . Its makeup is designed with skincare in mind, without parabens, artificial fragrances, formaldehyde, oxybenzone, or other toxic ingredients that are harmful to your skin (and the environment). With just a few pieces of Ilia makeup, you can put together a routine that’s quick and natural-looking—the kind you can wear from day to night once we’re on the road again.

One of Ilia's most popular products, the Super Serum Skin Tint , is one of those cosmetics that you never want to run out of. It’s essentially a three-in-one beauty product that combines foundation, hydrating serum, and SPF 40 (made with reef-safe zinc oxide), all in an airplane-friendly one-ounce bottle. A wide range of shades makes it easy to find the color that’s right for you; the website's shade matching tool helps, too—upload a photo of yourself and the brand will recommend the best tint. The serum is made with ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid to keep skin moisturized and glowing, while niacinamide means that those with sensitive or acne-prone skin don’t need to worry about breakouts (even if you occasionally forget to take it off before bed).

Ilia, Super Serum Tint

Ilia’s Color Haze , another multi-use product worth a spot in your Dopp kit , comes in a handy squeeze tube and works as both a lip tint and a cream blush. If you’re feeling bold, you can also use the tint on your eyelids. (Though if you're specifically looking for an eyeshadow, there’s a product for that , too.)

No look is complete without mascara, and Ilia created one that amplifies lashes without leaving little black flecks all over your face. Plus, it comes in a handy travel size that’s just 0.1 ounces—about half the size of a regular mascara wand.

For plane rides, there are two key products that will save dried-out skin: Ilia’s Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask , a clear emollient lip balm, and the Blue Light Mist , a refreshing spray that provides soothing hydration. (Both of which, like most Ilia products, can be recycled once you’ve finished them via the brand’s Zero Waste Box program .)

Dry airplane air, varying temperatures, and new foods can all affect your skin—and adding makeup to the mix can wreak havoc. But makeup feels accessible and easy for me with Ilia's multi-use beauty products , and more like an extension of my skincare routine. Before I started using Ilia, I pretty much only wore makeup on special occasions. Now I wear it almost every day—even while traveling.

My Brutally Honest ILIA Beauty Review (what I liked and didn’t like)

I’ve used ILIA for almost ten years and am sharing their best products (and worst) in my brutally honest ILIA review! I tested the ILIA Foundation, Concealer, Super Serum Skin Tint, Beyond Triple C Serum, Multi Stick, Volumizing Mascara, Limitless Lash Mascara, Lip Balm, Lipstick and NEW eyeshadow sticks!

Started by Canadian entrepreneur Sasha Plasvic, ILIA is a wildly popular clean makeup brand sold everywhere from Sephora to Nordstrom. ILIA started off a decade ago as an all-natural and organic makeup brand, but later switched to include synthetics so they could improve product performance and appeal to the masses. In 2022 ILIA Beauty was acquired by a major corporation, Clarins. Today, ILIA creates skincare-forward clean makeup that’s innovative and sophisticated with the use of what they call safe synthetics.

Originally born in Vancouver where founder Sasha is from, ILIA is currently based in California. ILIA makeup is made in the US with the exception of a couple products being made in Italy.

ILIA is a luxe brand, so the price range is around $30-$70. In my opinion, the best ILIA products are the True Skin Serum Foundation, ILIA concealer, all their lip products including Multi-Stick Cream Blush Lip Tint and (if you’re new to clean beauty) ILIA mascara. And keep in mind that this post is my personal opinion of what the best ILIA Beauty products are. Everyone has different tastes, preferences and skin types. Check out the 5 Best Natural Foundations that includes ILIA  here .

ILIA Lipstick

You will find synthetics included in all of ILIA’s products, including dimethicone in some of their face products. But, all ILIA formulas are cruelty-free and gluten-free, and are made without talc, parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance, BHA/BHT, propylene glycol, PEG’s, D4, D5, D6 and chemical screens.

For truly all natural makeup, check out this post .

Ilia the necessary eyeshadow palette.

ilia eyeshadow palette

If you’re in the market for a clean eyeshadow palette, ILIA is the best in clean beauty. It’s so high performance, pigmented and long wearing that it rivals mainstream makeup brands. There are three shimmer shades and three matte shades that are fun to play around with and create different looks. They have a velvety texture and offer magnetic application and blendability.

Here are swatches of their eyeshadow palette.

ILIA Eye Stylus Eyeshadow Stick

ILIA eyeshadow stick

These come in 20 matte and shimmer shades so you can mix and match to create fun looks. ILIA claims their eyeshadow sticks are waterproof, so I tested them in the pool. I would say they are very water resistant but would not consider them truly waterproof. The pigment does fade a bit after swimming plenty of laps in the pool.

Its one downside is the formula isn’t skincare focused and there’s nothing in the ingredients that’s actually GOOD for your skin. There are a lot of synthetic ingredients and not a single ingredient that can improve the eye skin area. The eyeshadow sticks are purely a makeup centric product and not skincare centric.

Check out the swatches below – my favorite shade is Gilded!

ILIA eyeshadow stick swatches

I also included a shot of the eyeshadow sticks after swimming laps in the pool to see how waterproof they really are. You can see they’re water resistant but have lost some pigment power.

ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

Considering C Beyond Triple Serum just launched, I’ll be updating my ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum review after using it more. ILIA’s newest makeup innovation is a waterless product that acts as a Vitamin C serum, sunscreen and makeup product simultaneously. Beyond C Triple Serum combines active levels of 10 percent vitamin C, niacinamide and broad-spectrum zinc oxide SPF 40 to protect skin against UVA and UVB rays. It comes in 3 sheer shades, Light, Medium and Deep.

Ilia C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

I bought C Beyond Triple Serum thinking it would be an aloe leaf juice based serum because they lead with “waterless serum.” ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum is an oil-based serum. It feels and applies like an oil serum would. It’s thinner in consistency than the ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 but definitely oilier.

ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40 is designed to streamline your skincare, so it theoretically replaces your Vitamin C serum, tinted moisturizer, and sunscreen. Hence, why it’s named Triple Serum.

ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

Don’t expect coverage with this product. The tint is very sheer and there is no coverage, though there’s a subtle blurring effect. I have to say I do like the sheer factor, because it allows your skin to look like your skin just enhanced.

The glow is STRONG. You’re basically getting the glazed donut look that you would get after doing your nighttime skincare routine. Not exactly my favorite look during the day, but I can see how some people who obsess over the glow effect might like it.

I have to say I really dislike the packaging. The pump is so difficult to use unless you flip the bottle upside and push it down at that angle.

C Beyond Triple Serum Pros:

  • Multi-tasking of skincare + tint + sunscreen
  • Lightweight and intensely moisturizing
  • 100% mineral (zinc oxide)

C Beyond Triple Serum Cons:

  • Expensive at $64
  • Poor packaging and difficult pump
  • Not buildable unless you want your skin to look and feel greasy
  • I can see people applying a small amount to avoid looking overly dewy and thinking they’re protecting their skin from UV rays when they’re actually leaving their skin under protected.

ILIA C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

I have a brutal in-depth review on the ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 here . Similar to the C Beyond Triple Serum, the Super Serum Skin Tint also provide SPF 40, acts as a tinted moisturizer and provides skincare benefits. There seems to be no middle ground with this product – you’re either going to love it or hate it.

ILIA SUPER SERUM SKIN TINT SPF 40

I appreciate that ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint’s vegan formula uses non-nano Zinc Oxide and contains no silicones, fragrance, or oils making it great for all skin types including sensitive. But I wish that ILIA would formulate for a more natural or satin finish.

While I know that this ILIA Skin Tint has a large fan base, it seems that there’s an equally large number of people who aren’t fans.

ILIA Multi Stick Face Palette

ILIA Multi Stick Face Palette

ILIA Multi Stick Face Palette

You get three new and three bestselling Multi-Stick shades for cheeks and lips. ILIA Multi sticks have the ideal amount of creaminess, not overly creamy (I’m looking at you Honest Beauty) and not too dry, plus the right amount of pigment that’s buildable. They can be used as a lip tint, blush or eyeshadow though I only use Multi-Sticks as a blush.

Here are swatches of the ILIA Multi Sticks in indoor natural light. It’s simply a gorgeous palette that’s so multi-functional. Plus, every shade is actually wearable.

This is multiple layers of product for you to see how the shades build.

Ilia multi stick palette

ILIA Multi-Stick

The ILIA Multi-Sticks come in a twist-up stick for easy, hands-free application and 12 different shades. The Multi-Sticks do not have any shimmer whatsoever except for the highlighter and bronzer shades. If you know me, you could probably guess that my favorite Multi-Stick shade is Tenderly.

ILIA Multi-Stick

ILIA Multi-sticks glide on easily and blend well while feeling buttery (but not overly creamy or greasy) thanks to the base of butters and oils like Sunflower Seed Oil, Castor Seed Oil, Avocado Oil, Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter. The highlighter Cosmic Dancer is a bit drier/less creamy than the other shades.

Ilia multi-stick swatches

With one swipe, the ILIA Multi-Sticks provide a sheer hint of color that looks like a natural flush and can be built for a more dramatic look.

Here’s what the Multi-Sticks look like in both cheeks and lips.

Ilia multi stick

ILIA Fullest Volumizing Mascara

ILIA Fullest Volumizing Mascara is a clean mascara that adds thickness and volume to lashes. It’s made of nylon micro-bristles in a violin shape a with a smudge-free and flake-free formula.

ILIA fullest volumizing mascara

At first I wasn’t impressed by the new ILIA mascara, especially since I have my go-to favorites for clean mascara that work for my sparse, short lashes. But once the formula aired out, the mascara performed better with adding volume. I haven’t had any smudging or flaking issues either. While ILIA Fullest Volumizing Mascara hasn’t beaten my absolute favorite clean mascara, it is a decent product.

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara

I know this is one of the most raved about ILIA products, but for me it’s just averagely decent? I don’t love it or hate it. Limitless Lash is a slicker wetter formula than Volumizing Lash mascara and helps lengthen and separate (I don’t experience any lifting action).

Product transfers onto my lashes in an average way, as in the way most mascaras do for my barely existent lashes, and wasn’t impressive in any way to me. Formula builds well, performs decently and wears well throughout the day. Limitless Lash is an okay to good mascara, but not impressively so.

Ilia limitless lash mascara

Limitless Lash does have an interesting brush design you don’t see often, or maybe ever. ILIA says they tested over 100 mascara wands, before choosing a patented dual-sided brush for a perfectly natural application. There’s a shorter side to curl and create volume, and a longer side that looks like a comb to lengthen and separate. It’s almost as if the mascara performs just okay for each function because half the brush is designed for one purpose and the other a different.

Ilia True skin Serum Foundation

ILIA True Skin Serum Foundation

The new ILIA True Skin Serum Foundation is an improved version of their original True Skin Foundation and comes in 40 inclusive shades. It performs identically providing light to medium coverage and a natural, satin finish but True Skin Serum Foundation is supercharged with more skin-beneficial ingredients. The new formula has added mastic gum, which helps fight oil production, and active levels of Niacinamide and Allantoin to improve skin barrier health, soothe inflammation and increase your skin’s ability to retain moisture.

Just like the True Skin Foundation, True Skin Serum Foundation is silky and smooth, feels lightweight and wears well throughout the day. Note that ILIA True Skin Serum Foundation does contain the silicone Dimethicone, which lends to its silkiness factor. If silicones cause you to break out I would proceed with caution.

True Skin Serum Foundation leaves a beautiful natural, satin-y finish that gives skin a filtered look. Depending on the condition of your skin, True Skin Serum Foundation may give you somewhere between light to medium coverage.

Unlike the Super Serum Skin Tint and C Beyond Triple Serum, ILIA’s foundation does not have a greasy or cakey factor to it.

Ilia balmy tint Hydrating lip balm

ILIA Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm

Lip products are ILIA’s specialty. It’s what started it all. ILIA’s lip conditioners were their first product ever and the brand was known for creating natural, high-performance lip products in their early days. The cult favorite lip conditioner is now the Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm, which is just a fancy way of saying “tinted lip balm.”

Ilia multi-stick lip conditioner

Offered in 8 shades and made with tons of natural good-for-your lips ingredient (but also artificial dyes to achieve their color), ILIA tinted lip conditioners (now Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm) moisturize lips with Sea Succulent, Rosehip Seed Oil, Castor Seed Oil, Shea Butter and more.

They are semi-sheer so one swipe of ILIA tinted lip balm will provide just a subtle hint of color with your natural lip color still dominant. If you want more pigment then you’ll need to do multiple swipes. ILIA Balmy Tint Hydrating Lip Balm is a buttery balm that feels very moisturizing without being over the top greasy. If you prefer a drier tinted lip balm (luxury) then check out Henne Organics.

Even though the ILIA tinted lip balms are more buttery than the ILIA Multi-Sticks, I sometimes use them as a cream blush for a monochrome look (or from pure laziness).

ILIA has changed out some colors and changed the names of the most popular colors they kept.

Nobody’s Baby is now Hold Me, Bang Bang is Heartbeats, and Arabian Nights is now Wanderlust.

ILIA’s tinted lip balms are buildable so you can apply once for sheer color or multiple layers for more of a bold lip. The original formula was more thin/dense, but the newer version feels more creamy. I wish ILIA would create more shades in the nude and pink range.

Ilia color block lipstick

ILIA Color Block Lipstick

I really liked their Color Block Lipstick, but ILIA discontinued their Humble Me nude shade and only offer a ton of shades that are all too deep for me.

All of ILIA’s lipsticks have a natural finish with no shimmer. They’re formulated to provide intense pigment power and long lasting wear while moisturizing lips with a vegan formula of castor seed oil, jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil and Shea butter.

Ilia color block lipstick

I think it’s crazy that there isn’t a single light nude or light pink shade. Knockout looks like a fun, bright lipstick shade, but I wouldn’t be able to use it for an everyday look.

Nevertheless, ILIA lipsticks are high-performance, highly pigmented lipsticks.

ILIA Blue light mist

ILIA Blue Light Mist

The ILIA Beauty Blue Light Mist is a multi-tasking product that acts as a makeup setting mist, hydrating mist and blue light/pollution fighting mist.

I don’t think the ILIA blue light mist is worth the nearly $40 it costs. It doesn’t set makeup in the way that a chemical-laden product like Urban Decay’s would. There are much more affordable  options that exist in clean beauty. If you take a look at the full ingredients list of ILIA’s Blue Light Mist you’ll find water, pentylene glycol and propanediol as the first three ingredients. That’s a lot of money to pay for water and synthetic humectants. Pentylene glycol has been shown by studies to be a skin irritant that causes contact dermatitis.

I would suggest checking out a very similar dupe in clean beauty made by Gen Z brand INNBEAUTY Project that costs $22 called Innbeauty Project Power Up 3-in-1 Face Mist . Just like ILIA it’s a mist and setting spray in one, and just like ILIA, it hydrates more than it actually sets makeup. You don’t get the luxe, glass packaging of ILIA, but you do get better ingredients.

Ilia radiant translucent powder spf 20

Radiant Translucent Powder SPF 20

I always love a brush-on spf powder for reapplication when I’m out and about, and while there are many pros to the ILIA SPF 20 powder, there’s also some major drawbacks. This talc free powder is a white shade but goes on translucent.

It’s a super fine and soft powder that gives skin a beautiful airbrushed look, and the brush bristles are high quality. The major downfall of this product is that SPF 20 is too low for me to use on its own and the bottom container of powder comes easily undone, which means wasted spillage if you’re not making sure that it’s screwed on tightly. I also couldn’t figure out how to buy a replacement jar on its own without having to buy the entire packaging.

For a similar product that’s higher quality and higher SPF I recommend the Jane Iredale Powder Me SPF 30

This was super helpful thanks for sharing about Ilia!

I’m so glad to hear it thanks for stopping by!

Very much enjoyed reading your honest and thoughtful reviews on Iliad, especially the face serums. I’ve found the trend towards “dewy”, “glowy” finishes actually makes the face look oily & greasy; particularly, if you have normal skin. Even dry skin ends up oily looking & feeling.

Thanks so much! Yes the glazed donut look?

Larissa Avatar

The sunscreens leak and are filthy to clean up. Absolutely can’t travel with them unless you put the container in a sealed plastic bag. It smells funny, too. I won’t be buying at again.

Good to know thanks for sharing!?

I noticed that the Ilia skin tint sunscreen has a rating of 7 on EWG site. What is your take on it in terms of toxicity? Thanks much!

Is Ilia’s Skin Tint The Perfect Lightweight Foundation? We Review.

c84df75b4562878bf092c20eb3cd7edf

This review is not sponsored and contains the author’s personal experience. The Good Trade was gifted this product. The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here .

I’m not a big foundation person. Like, at all. I think the last one I purchased was a gloopy bottle of Covergirl back in high school for dance competitions—I’m a strictly skin tint gal. So I’ve been itching to try Ilia’s Skin Tint since it hit the market in 2020, claiming to combine lightweight coverage with physical sunscreen and ingredients that make your skin glow. If I’m going to wear foundation, I at least want it to be good for my skin.

The product utilizes skin-loving ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and squalane and continues to win award after award since its launch. Glamour and Allure both named it the best clean foundation in 2020, and it was one of Travel + Leisure’s “Top Pick” beauty products in 2022 (it’s also received recognition from Elle, Refinery29, Byrdie, Shape, and Health.com). Anyone who’s anyone loves Ilia Skin Tint, it seems.

Sasha Plavsic founded Ilia in 2011 when she set out to recreate her favorite lip balm with clean ingredients. The brand now sells a strong lineup of makeup products like mascaras, liners, powders, foundations, eye shadows, lipsticks, and some multi-use pigments, along with a handful of skincare products. They’re big on incorporating SPF into their products to enhance the performance of actives, and they call their ingredients consciously sourced, noting that “not every natural ingredient is good for the skin, nor is every synthetic bad.” Clean beauty is all about nuance!

So, does their skin tint live up to the hype? That’s what I wanted to find out.

Finding your perfect shade is pretty straightforward. Ilia’s website shows multiple models wearing each shade, and shades are separated by neutral/warm/olive/cool undertones. You can also send in up to five photos to get professionally color-matched by their team, or head into your local Sephora , Credo Beauty , or Nordstrom to try the product in person. According to my meticulous research (reading the product listing 😅), my perfect shade seemed to be ST4, a.k.a. Formosa.

The product comes in a minimalistic, serum-like dropper bottle. Star ingredients include niacinamide, which helps reduce inflammation while evening skin tone and texture; hyaluronic acid, which helps the skin retain hydration; and squalane, a lightweight, non-comedogenic oil to lock in moisture. The product’s SPF 40 comes from non-nano zinc oxide, a physical sunscreen that leaves a slight white cast when applied but disappears almost instantly.

Ilia Skin Tint

Clean beauty lovers will be pleased to know the product is silicone-free, chemical sunscreen-free, vegan, and fragrance-free, and the bottle can be recycled in a standard recycling bin. You can recycle the dropper through TerraCycle .

My skin is combination/acne prone, with an oily t-zone in the summer and dry patches in the winter. It’s not sensitive, but many beauty editors with sensitive skin praise the tint for its non-irritating formulation.

How I Used It

The bottle says to shake well before application—check. Then it says to dispense a quarter-sized amount into your palms and apply it like a serum. I warmed the product between my hands and gently pressed it into my skin for best results. While the product is thin and oily, rubbing it in like a moisturizer seemed to pull at my skin too much and catch on a couple of dry flakes irritated by Differin, while pressing the product in left a more natural finish.

I’ve avoided purchasing this product for the past three years, fearing this ultra-dewy skin tint might accentuate my oily t-zone. But I was completely mistaken—it dried even more satiny than other skin tints I’ve tried. The finish isn’t oil or matte. It’s best described as skinlike. I thought this would only be a winter product for me, but it looks like it’ll make the summertime top shelf, too.

Ilia Skin Tint

Beauty blenders are typically my applicator of choice for skin tints, and I loved the finish even better when I used one (not to mention my cleaner hands!). But I’m glad to know it’s certainly not necessary for application, especially when I travel and want to pack lighter.

After a bit of setting powder or spray, the tint seems to wear well all day long, not making my skin cakey, dry, or flaky. And at the end of the day, it came off easily with a double cleanse.

The Takeaway

To me, this product is absolutely worth its $48 price tag. If applied onto clean skin so the actives can do their thing, the product replaces a niacinamide serum, moisturizer, and SPF, along with adding light coverage, making the price feel almost like a steal.

Ilia Skin Tint

However, if you’re not comfortable replacing your entire routine with this product, that’s understandable—maybe you have other morning serums you use or dry skin that needs a heavier daily moisturizer. And if I were going to the beach or hiking, for example, I’d layer on another SPF for more intense protection (especially if I’m not using a whole quarter size of product). Ilia’s Skin Tint ticked all the right boxes for me. Between the brand’s ethos, the packaging’s recyclability, and the product’s clean formulation and excellent performance, I’ll happily repurchase. The skincare lover in me embraces an excuse to turn part of my makeup routine into a skincare step, too.

Key Takeaways

  • Ilia is an elevated clean beauty brand focusing on skin-centric makeup with natural finishes. They’re cruelty-free and committed to 1% for the Planet .
  • Ilia’s Skin Tint debuted with high praise in 2020. It combines hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and zinc oxide for a hybrid serum/moisturizer/SPF/foundation.
  • The SPF 40 product comes in 30 shades and clocks in at $48.
  • Ilia’s website lets you send in up to five photos to get shade-matched by their team, and you can also check out the product in person at Sephora , Credo Beauty , and Nordstrom .

This Foundation That Doubles as Skincare Is My New Go-To

Taking care of your skin can turn into a time-consuming part of your daily routine. There are always buzzy skincare ingredients to try and new makeup products to finish off your look. In the spirit of saving time and money, why not buy a product that combines both elements?

Multitaskers, meet Ilia's new-and-improved True Skin Serum Foundation , a medium coverage liquid foundation that not only hides blemishes and provides a dewy glow, but also treats skin to a facial of soothing, protective ingredients. It sounds too good to be true, but I tried a sample from the brand and can confirm it's real, and it works.

A new version of the foundation launched in February after more than 5,000 people signed up for its waitlist. Like many of the brand's other best-sellers, the product contains the best of makeup and skincare and is cruelty-free, vegan, and dermatologist tested. Its three active skincare ingredients are Niacinamide, a B vitamin with anti-inflammatory properties—ideal for acne-prone skin; allantoin, a soothing moisturizer that comes from a plant; and calming aloe .

I prefer a natural makeup look, and that's exactly what this product delivers. The liquid formula is silky and lightweight, yet just a few drops provide ample coverage that you can build up as you like. Blend it in with a brush, a sponge, or your fingers to conceal uneven skin tones and acne scars, revealing a subtle glow.

The foundation is now available in 30 shades, and if you're not sure which to choose, you can take advantage of the site's shade finder feature . Narrow down your options by taking a shade match quiz or by sending the brand a makeup-free selfie, so a team of real people can help you figure out the best shade for your skin. I took advantage of this feature when I tried the brand's famous Super Serum Skin Tint , and the recommendations they provided were spot on.

To buy: $54; iliabeauty.com .

Thousands of shoppers with various skin types, tones, and concerns have left the foundation positive reviews . Many said they were pleasantly surprised by how well the shade they bought matched their skin tone, and others noted that it's easy to apply, feels nice on the skin, and offers a smooth finish.

If you're looking for a medium coverage foundation that includes skincare essentials, head to Ilia to find your shade of it's new serum foundation and spend less time on your morning routine.

Ilia Foundation Review: Is This Cult-Favorite Product Worth the Hype?

ilia travel size foundation

When it comes to beauty, there’s no doubt that I love to test out new products ( it is my job after all.) However, I’m definitely more eager about trying products from brands that I’m somewhat familiar with. After seeing so many positive reviews and a lot of talk on social media, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by Ilia Foundation.

After testing so many makeup products over the years, I definitely have had a lot of experience with different types of foundation. I rely on it to help me look more awake ( night owl over here ) and leave my skin with a dewy, healthy look. But in my quest to find the right foundation, I learned that not all of them should be treated equally. Not even close .

When shopping for a foundation , it’s important to choose a product that perfectly matches your skin tone. The right foundation can cover up hyperpigmentation and dark spots, and can make you feel more put-together and confident. So as I continued to come across recommendations for all things Ilia Beauty, I couldn’t help but wonder: could their foundation really be as great as it appears?

Thousands of women swear by it, so I just had to find out for myself. I’m dedicating this post to give you a deep dive the cult-favorite Ilia Foundation, along with everything you need to know about it.

Ilia Foundation Review

For this review, I’m focusing specifically on Ilia Beauty’s True Skin Serum Foundation . For the record, I’ve tried the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 (check out my review of it here ) and in my opinion, it acts more like a tinted moisturizer with sun protection than a true foundation.

The True Skin Serum Foundation is a clean beauty product, meaning it’s vegan and cruelty-free. It might not be the best foundation for someone with dry skin, but it usually works great for oily, combo, and normal skin types.

Also, because it’s formulated to work on a variety of skin types, it’s been mentioned among the best makeup for older women .

This foundation is already incredibly popular, especially among beauty influencers, and it continues to increase in popularity. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at whether Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation is worth the hype.

Ilia Foundation Review

Ilia Foundation Ingredients

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation contains powerful skincare ingredients including Niacinamide , Allantoin, and aloe. Niacinamide is great for smoothing and refining uneven skin tones and textures. Allantoin promotes healthy skin and helps diminish the appearance of redness and irritation. Lastly, aloe is great for calming, hydrating, and nourishing your skin—so all three of these powerhouse ingredients offer up major benefits.

Ilia Foundation Application

To apply the True Skin Serum Foundation , you can use your fingers, a makeup sponge, or a foundation brush. In my experience, you’ll get the most natural finish by applying the product with your fingers or a damp beauty blender .

I break down the application process further down in this post, but ultimately it’s up to you to decide how you want to apply this foundation. With that being said, I can appreciate a product that’s versatile enough to give you the option to choose how you want to apply it.

Ilia Foundation Formula

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation is a silky-smooth, breathable foundation available in 30(!!) different shades. It’s formulated to melt into your skin for seamless, buildable coverage. And with ingredients like Niacinamide and Allantoin, it visibly improves the look of your skin over time.

Is Ilia Foundation Good?

YES! Like I mentioned above, I’ve tried my fair share of foundations. I’ve even reviewed high-end products like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ( review here ). I can say with confidence that Ilia Foundation is good quality and great for different skin types. I also appreciate that it comes in so many shades.

If you’re looking for a medium-coverage foundation, I definitely recommend you try Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation.

How to Apply Ilia Serum Foundation

How to Apply Ilia Serum Foundation

Prep your skin.

To ensure this foundation lasts as long as possible, Ilia Beauty recommends that you prep your skin with a few drops of True Skin Radiant Priming Serum . Give the serum at least 60 seconds to sink into your skin before applying the foundation.

Shake Well Before Pumping

Next, shake the foundation bottle well to ensure that the formula is well-blended. Then, uncap and dispense one to two pumps into the palm of your hand.

Begin blending the foundation into your skin, using your fingers, a beauty blender, or a foundation brush. This product offers buildable coverage, so I recommend starting with a small amount of foundation. Then, you can apply another thin layer wherever you need more coverage.

To finish, gently press your palms against your skin to encourage the foundation to melt into your skin. This ensures the natural finish that so many people love about this product.

Ilia Skin Tint Foundation shades

Ilia Skin Tint Foundation vs Serum Foundation

While Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation is a medium coverage foundation, Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint Foundation offers light coverage.

While both products have the benefit of acting like a foundation and serum in a single product, there are a few additional, noteworthy differences between the two products.

For one, the Skin Tint SPF 40 offers the added benefit of sun protection . As for the finish, the Skin Tint Foundation offers a more radiant finish, while the True Skin Serum Foundation will produce a more natural-looking finish.

Additionally, if you prefer a water-based product, I would go with the Skin Tint, as it’s oil-free. But it’s worth noting that the True Skin Serum Foundation isn’t super oily either, so it’s okay to use on oily skin.

The final difference I want to point out is the ingredients: True Skin Serum Foundation is made with Niacinamide, Allantoin, and aloe. The Skin Tint Foundation is made with plant-based Squalane , Niacinamide, and Hyaluronic Acid .

If you’re trying to decide between the two products, I would recommend going with whichever one suits your needs. Both promote healthy, clean skin and work well with sensitive and acne-prone complexions. But, as I mentioned above, the True Skin Serum Foundation offers more coverage.

Where to Buy Ilia Beauty Foundation

  • Nordstrom
  • ILIA Beauty

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation is a great medium-coverage foundation for almost all skin types.

Medium coverage? Check. Natural finish? Check. Easy application? Check. Clean, vegan, and cruelty-free? Check!

Ilia True Skin Serum Foundation checks all the boxes. It’s definitely worth trying if you’re looking for a new foundation to give you a flawless, glowy look.

Best SPF Foundations For Travel

For all our beach babes out there, the sun is going to be your best friend and worst enemy. We all know that holiday mode often means getting some sun and colour into your skin but we also need to protect ourselves from incredibly harmful UV rays at the same time.

SPF foundations are great for adding that little extra layer of protection on top of your usual sunscreen or opt to use a travel foundation with high SPF to combine two products into one.

This Tinted SPF Serum Is My Secret to Flawless, Glowing Skin While Traveling — With No Makeup Bag Required

My 40-something skin has never appeared more youthful and moisturized.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Entering your 40s is full of empowering perks, from being more confident in your own skin to truly learning which friends are the ones you want to invest your energy in. But aging is not without its struggles. As a busy 43-year-old mom, I find my skincare routine becoming increasingly focused on evening out my skin tone, keeping my face moisturized to the max, and avoiding things like under eye circles or fine lines.

On a recent vacation (with one of those 40-something forever friends), I realized I had forgotten to pack my foundation so, while shopping, we wandered into a makeup store, where I begged for help. As I listed my concerns — fine lines, dry skin, feeling the constant need to exfoliate to keep my skin looking radiant — the employee led me to the section of the store where Ilia Beauty was stocked. He suggested the brand’s Super Serum Skin Tint and, while I was familiar with serum foundations, I was hesitant to go all in. After all, wouldn't something serum-based make my skin appear greasy?

To buy: iliabeauty.com , $50

Always one to listen to the expert, I decided to try something new and purchased the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint . The $50 price tag seemed well worth it considering it contained SPF 40 and lots of skin-healthy ingredients, like hydrating squalane, moisturizing shea butter, and anti-aging niacinamide (a powerhouse that improves texture, smoothness, brightness, and fine lines). I took it back to our hotel, ready to apply it before our evening dinner plans.

The first thing I noticed about the serum was how lightweight it was. While I expected it to have an oily, greasy texture, it was anything but. The serum went on smoothly with my makeup sponge and I immediately thought, “Maybe I don’t need to wear concealer and powder over this.” I tested out the theory, adding no additional makeup to my face other than some mascara and light blush. I looked well-rested. My complexion appeared more youthful. I finally had the dewy, glowy vacation skin that everyone always seems to be after.

Since that night, I’ve continued using Ilia with the same results. Whether I’m applying light makeup to run a few errands or getting full-face glam for a date night with my husband, Ilia has become the foundation of every makeup look. It covers my skin flawlessly and, unlike a lot of heavier formulas, never settles into the fine lines around my eyes or on my forehead. Whenever I use it, my skin looks glowing and super-moisturized — without looking oily.

I’m not the only one who loves this skin tint serum. Reviewers praise its formula for blending seamlessly, being lightweight, and providing moisturizing coverage. “If this ever is discontinued, I’ll be in ruins,” shared one fan.

Travel + Leisure / Esther Carlstone

“Absolutely love this skin tint,” wrote another. “Applies easily with your hands and leaves a gorgeous glow to the skin. It has a sheer coverage but just enough to cover my redness. I have dry skin and this gives a perfect boost of moisture.”

While some reviewers also commented on the “slight clay smell” of the serum, it’s not something I find to be an issue. The smell is earthy with notes of sunscreen, something that makes sense to me since it’s full of SPF.

Since purchasing this holy grail beauty product, I’ve found I pack way less makeup when traveling as a result. Gone are the days when I traveled with a full makeup bag that contained foundation, powder, and concealer. My skin looks and feels so glowing and moisturized that I save valuable packing space and use this product as my sole form of face makeup. And, since it’s got such a high SPF content, I even use it for a day at the beach or the theme park, when I’m makeup-free.

If you’re on a journey to minimize the products you travel with, Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint is a great way to bring less face makeup along on your journey. My daily routine these days is the serum, mascara and blush, and I’m out the door — ready to have an adventure and keep my skin protected with an SPF.

This Genius Hack for Packing Liquid Foundation Is Foolproof and Flight-Attendant Approved

ilia travel size foundation

There is, however, a genius solution for ensuring just the right amount of your liquid foundation, eye cream, and concealer *always* makes it to your final destination: "You can put almost anything in [contact] lens cases,” says Jessica Lehmkuhl, a flight attendant who uses the hack to pack her own beauty products when she's traveling off-duty.

“I’m exempt from normal airport screenings,” she says. “But when I travel personally and not for work, I'll put my foundation in a contact lens case.”

Flight attendant hack for packing liquid foundation for travel

Lehmkuhl started using this trick four years ago after seeing other people repurposing their own cases that way. On average, she estimates that a full lens case, both the left and right sides, lasts her at least a week. “I don’t use a ton of foundation,” she says. “I combo it with powder foundation, and I use the same amount as you would use putting lotion on my face."

Aside from freeing up more of the limited space in your luggage, being able to BYO-products means being able to replicate your own beauty routine on the road as easily as you can at home. (Read: no unfortunate makeup matching mishaps.) Because while   travel-size natural beauty products do exist, the selection isn't nearly as extensive as, say, a Fenty foundation palette . But hey, here's hoping that changes very soon as inclusivity becomes more mainstream .

For now, try making this hack your new travel buddy. But before you do, Lehmkuhl offers some words of caution: Make sure the lids are screwed on tight so they don’t come undone due to cabin pressure. She also recommends labeling each case so you know what's in them. The flight attendant says this isn't a situation where you want to wing it.

My Honest Review of Ilia's Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation

  • AUGUST 7, 2021

by  Kaleigh Fasanella

As someone who struggles with super sensitive and chronically dry skin, I tend to be ultra picky when it comes to face makeup. This is because many formulas tend to highlight my dry, flaky areas (like around my nose and mouth), and that, my friends, is never a cute look. On top of that, some foundations and tinted moisturizers contain ingredients that are simply too harsh for my highly reactive complexion. For this reason, I’m extremely conscious about what’s in the formulas I use. If it’s packed with drying ingredients and artificial fragrance, I’m not about it. When it comes to the face, makeup formulas I’m actually a fan of, well, they’re typically hydrating, dewy, skin-loving, and contain some level of sun protection. Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation , for instance, is hands-down one of my new favorite finds. And it meets all of the aforementioned criteria of what I look for in a foundation-type product.

ilia travel size foundation

Put simply, Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation is exactly what it sounds like: a featherlight, serum-like foundation that features a solid amount of sun protection. It’s made with non-nano zinc oxide, which means it offers mineral protection that shields against UVA, UVB, UVC, and blue light—all of which contribute to premature signs of aging. Ingredient-wise, it contains nourishing squalane, texture-smoothing niacinamide, and two forms of hyaluronic acid to help improve moisture levels in the skin. Additionally, it’s formulated without fragrance, silicones, oil, and was clinically tested to be non-comedogenic and safe for sensitive skin (it’s also on Sephora’s clean list, for those who prioritize that). Another bonus about this foundation is that it comes in 30 shades and includes options for dark and deep skin tones, as well as those who are incredibly fair.

Now let’s get into my personal experience with the product, shall we?

What I love most about this foundation is the fact that it feels virtually weightless on the skin yet still offers a super decent level of coverage. You can definitely get a sheer finish with this if you just use a dot or two, but I typically use three or four dots because I prefer a medium level of coverage. Speaking of which, it disguises my redness beautifully, and since it’s so hydrating, it doesn’t exacerbate my dry spots or look cakey at all, which is major. The finish is definitely on the dewy side, so if you’re oily, you’ll likely want to set this with powder, but for all my dry-skinned babes out there, trust me—you will adore the radiance it gives the skin.

As you can see in my before-and-after photos, it looks nearly undetectable on the skin, which is why I love it so much. Also, once it dries down, it feels like I’m wearing nothing. That’s right, folks—nothing. My only small qualm with this product is the price: It’s $48 for 1 oz, and well, if you’re using it every single day, realistically, it won’t last very long.

ilia travel size foundation

In the left photo, I’m wearing nothing on my skin, and in the second photo, I’m wearing three dots of Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation blended out with a beauty sponge. Credit: Kaleigh Fassanella

How to Apply

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to face makeup application, but in my experience, using a slightly damp beauty sponge has given me the best results. It ensures you don’t overdo it with coverage, and it helps melt the formula into the skin really beautifully. Plus, it takes approximately 30 seconds to blend out with a beauty sponge, whereas when I tried using a brush, it took longer and left some streaks behind (though, to be fair, that could’ve been the brush I used and not the foundation’s fault). At the end of the day, you can apply this foundation in whatever way feels best for you. Some may choose to use a sponge, like yours truly, while others may favor using their fingers or a brush for more control. No matter what tool you use, I’d recommend starting with just one or two dots to see how you like the coverage before going in with more.

Remember, you can always build this formula up if you need to.

Overall Verdict

So, is I lia’s Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Foundation worth the hype? I have to say yes, yes it is. Not only is it lightweight and good for your skin, but it also protects your complexion from future damage and looks stunning on all skin tones. Sure, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but a little does go a long way. If you think about it, you’re basically getting a foundation, serum, and sunscreen all in one product. That being said, if you have super oily skin, this may not be your favorite. As for my folks with normal and dry skin, I’d highly recommend giving it a go.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Moscow, like other international urban areas , is decentralizing, despite considerable barriers. The expansion will lead to even more decentralization, which is likely to lead to less time "stuck in traffic" and more comfortable lifestyles. Let's hope that Russia's urban development policies, along with its plans to restore population growth, will lead to higher household incomes and much improved economic performance.

Note 1: The 23 ward (ku) area of Tokyo is the geography of the former city of Tokyo, which was abolished in the 1940s. There is considerable confusion about the geography of Tokyo. For example, the 23 ward area is a part of the prefecture of Tokyo, which is also called the Tokyo Metropolis, which has led some analysts to think of it as the Tokyo metropolitan area (labor market area). In fact, the Tokyo metropolitan area, variously defined, includes, at a minimum the prefectures of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama with some municipalities in Gunma, Ibaraki and Tochigi. The metropolitan area contains nearly three times the population of the "Tokyo Metropolis."

Road in city area.

The roads and ways of the city areas are very clumsy and many accidents are happening due to the short road. But you need to maintain the driving properly otherwise you may face accident. So now the government decided to expand the road which may put the positive effect on automobile sector. I think it is a helpful service for the society people. If you have a BMW car and you have faced any problem then better to repair it at BMW Repair Spring, TX for the best service.

Transit & transportation

Transit and transportation services are quite impressive in most of the urban cities; therefore people were getting better benefits from suitable transportation service. Urban cities like Moscow, Washington, New York and Tokyo; we have found high margin of transportation system that helps to build a better communication network in these cities. I hope through the help of modern transportation system we are able to bring revolutionary change in automobile industries; in this above article we have also found the same concepts to develop transportation system. Moscow is bursting Noblesse

Moscow is bursting Noblesse at the seams. The core city covers more than 420 square miles (1,090 kilometers), and has a population of approximately 11.5 million people. With 27,300 residents per square mile (10,500 per square kilometer), Moscow is one percent more dense than the bleach anime watch city of New York, though Moscow covers 30 percent more land. The 23 ward area of Tokyo (see Note) is at least a third more dense, though Moscow's land area is at least half again as large as Tokyo. All three core areas rely

Russians seeing the light while Western elites are bickering?

What an extremely interesting analysis - well done, Wendell.

It is also extremely interesting that the Russian leadership is reasonably pragmatic about urban form, in contrast to the "planners" of the post-rational West.

An acquaintance recently sent me an article from "The New Yorker", re Moscow's traffic problems.

The article "abstract" is HERE (but access to the full article requires subscription)

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/08/02/100802fa_fact_gessen

One classic quote worth taking from it, is: "People will endure all manner of humiliation to keep driving".

I do find it odd that the "New Yorker" article author says nothing at all about the rail transit system Moscow had, on which everyone was obliged to travel, under Communism. It can't surely have vaporised into thin air?

Moscow is a classic illustration of just how outmoded rails are, and how important "automobility" is, when the auto supplants rails so rapidly than even when everybody did travel on rails up to a certain date, and the road network dates to that era, when nobody was allowed to own a car; an article written just 2 decades later does not even mention the rail transit system, other than to criticise the mayor for "failing to invest in a transit system".......!!!!!!!!

This is also a give-away of "The New Yorker's" inability to shake off the modern PC ideology on rails vs cars.
