Naxos at a glance

Beautiful Naxos is a sparkling star in the deep blue galaxy of Aegean Sea islands.  And the enchantment starts as your ferry glides into harbour.

Spread before you are the gleaming white buildings of the old quarter of Naxos Town with a medieval Venetian castle crowning the hill.

But first there is a truly ancient welcome to this historic island - a huge marble doorway, part of an ancient temple to sun god Apollo.

Today, 2,500 years after this gateway was built, sun-worshippers flock to this, the largest of the Cycladic islands which offers so many timeless attractions. 

Golden beaches, crystal-clear sea, charming and historic villages, friendly people, ancient sites, stunning countryside and wonderful food are the ingredients that make this place so memorable. 

Naxos is said to be lined with almost 100km of beaches, most of them gorgeous soft sand. Tavernas, sunbeds and sunshades are available on many but, despite the increasing popularity of Naxos, there are coves and bays tucked away for those who want to avoid crowds.

The old part of stylish Naxos Town is a hillside maze of stone-flagged alleyways built with twists and turns to deter invading pirates.  Now they are a sheer delight for tourists. Then there is a long, bustling waterfront with a great selection of restaurants and shops.

The island is rightly proud of its great local produce so look out for dishes with home-grown potatoes and locally made cheeses.

There are places to eat and drink in the charming small towns, villages and hamlets dotted across this lovely island.  Seek them out by using the reliable bus service, hire a car or bike or take an excursion.

Naxos is an island of Greece that can fulfill anyone's appetite. The bigger the island, the more things to do, right? And since Naxos is the biggest island of the Cyclades you will definitely need a whole week to cross out more than half of the things to see & do on your list. Upon entering the port of the whitewashed Chora of Naxos you'll encounter the islet ofPalatiaat its entrance. On Palatia islet the impressive marble gate,  temple of Apollo, “Portara” stands still since the 6th century BC. According to mythology, the god Dionysus met Ariadni there, who had been abandoned by Thesseus. 

Chora, the capital of Naxos, whose landmark is an imposing Venetian castle, is an old castle town with stone paved alleys (known as kalderimia in Greek) where you can admire a unique blend of Cycladic and Medieval architecture: mansions with Venetian blazons still decorating their entrances, narrow arched alleys (known as stegadia in Greek), catholic churches and fortifications.

The island is located in the Aegean Sea and is the largest of the Cyclades island group. It has an area of 489 square kilometres and a population of around 19,000. It is famous for its mountains, beautiful beaches and rustic villages, making it an excellent holiday destination. The capital of Naxos is known as Chora, a harbour town, crammed with whitewashed houses and Venetian architecture.

The weather in Naxos is pleasant, with a hot dry climate, which is slightly cooler than many of the surrounding islands thanks to the cool Aegean breeze that blows across it. The summer lasts from May to September and is warm, with an average temperature of 22 degrees each day. The hottest month of the year is August, where temperatures can average an impressive 30 degrees, perfect for enjoying a relaxing beach holiday.

History and Culture

In mythology Naxos was the island where Zeus grew up, hidden away from his murderous father Cronus. It was also supposed to be favoured by Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, who blessed it with fertile valleys that produced some of the best wine in the Hellenic world. In antiquity, Naxos was initially occupied by the Thracians, before becoming an important part of the Ionian empire in the 7th century BC. Following that it became one of the many Greek islands that partook in the Persian war. As city-states gave way to large empires, Naxos was a part of the Ptolemy’s empire, before being subsumed by the Romans in 41 BC. More recently it was dominated by the Venetians and the Ottomans, becoming a part of the newly formed Greek state in 1831.

Naxos’ traditional specialities tend to focus on meat and potatoes, with ‘rosto’ (meat in red sauce), ‘karfa’ (a kind of omelette), ‘kakavia’ (fish soup), ‘pentarates’ (a potato dish) and stuffed lamb all very popular. The island is also famous for the quality of its wine and was considered to be favoured by Dionysus in ancient times, meaning that traditional local wines are a must for any visitor. Naxos is also a modern tourist destination, where you can find a wide selection of international restaurants.

Family Activities

For families who love to relax on the beach, discover Agios Georgios, Agios Prokopios and Aggia Anna, all with excellent family-friendly beaches, with shallow waters and soft golden sands. Stelida and the Aqua Fun Water Park, are the perfect place to have some aquatic fun, which combines waterslides, refreshing swimming pools and a whole host more for a family holiday . There are also a large number of stables, offering the opportunity to explore the beauty of the island from the back of a horse.

Enjoy exploring the island’s excellent beaches, including Plaka, Aggia Anna, Agios Georgios and Agios Prokopios, all abounding with golden sands, azure waters and unique twists, making them stand out from the crowd. While Mount Zas, one of the places that Zeus is supposed to have grown up in Greek mythology, is also both fascinating and beautiful. Finally, anyone interested in history should visit, Kastro, the 13th century Venetian castle famous for its impregnability.

Visitors looking for a vibrant and eccentric nightlife can look forward to relaxing bars to livelier night spots. The island is famous for its live music and the Chora castle often organizes live music, along with a spattering of local acts, which perform in the many bars of the capital. There are also a large number of beachside bars and two large nightclubs, called Ocean and Abyss.

Our boat tour went to Paros, where we were able to walk around for a few hours, and we made stops to swim here and there, plus we enjoyed lunch and fabulous fruit tray. And wine! It was a wonderful, relaxing day. We enjoyed the company of the others on the boat, and taking in the beauty of Greece.

We took the route from Naxos to Koufonisi. We stopped at Rina's caves on the way out and at Alyko on the way back. At every stop there were at least 30 minutes for swimming and exploring. On the way stunning landscapes of Naxos island remote rocky shores.

The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos offers you the chance to explore golden-sand beaches, whitewashed farming villages and ancient ruins. The island has played a vital role in Greek mythology — this is where Dionysus met and married Ariadne and it’s home to one of the (many) caves said to be where Zeus was born. More historically, this was an important ancient trading hub and you can visit significant archaeological ruins here. During the Middle Ages, the main town was a major stronghold for the Venetians and later the Byzantines, who left behind a rich architectural legacy that you can explore.

Today, Naxos is quieter than its better-known sisters. Boasting a fertile interior, it’s the main agricultural producer for other Cycladic Islands, and you’ll be able to visit small farming villages that have largely disappeared elsewhere in the archipelago.

Things to see and do in Naxos

Arriving into Naxos Town, you’re greeted by the door-like remains of a temple to Apollo standing like a sentinel at the mouth of the bay. The island’s history is written in the architecture of the town — this was the capital of the Venetian Duchy of the Aegean from the 13th to the 16th centuries, and you can see many mansions from the era still standing in the town’s kastro area. You might also like to explore some of the small Byzantine chapels tucked in among the streets.

Hiking through the villages of Naxos

Nearby, the village of Moni is home to Panagia Drosiani, a Byzantine-era church where nuns and monks secretly taught local children about Christianity during the Turkish occupation. Even smaller hamlets, like Kaloxilos and Akadimi, support fewer than 100 residents amid surrounding olive groves and scrubby oaks.

Best time to visit Naxos

Like all of the Greek islands, Naxos is primarily a seasonal destination, and many hotels and restaurants only open from May to October. July and August are typically the hottest times of the year and the busiest, though crowds here are thinner than you’ll find at many other islands. May to June and September to October are better times to go, when you’re likely to be accompanied by blue skies, warm weather and fewer visitors.

Folegandros

Conosciute come “le perle dell’Egeo”, sono forse le isole greche più famose per le vacanze estive.

Sono in tutto 56, di cui meno della metà abitate, diverse una dall’altra per paesaggi, spiagge e tradizioni locali.

Su tutte però: casette bianche con tetti piatti e finestre blu a farla da padrone, mare cristallino, belle spiagge e i tipici balconi di legno colorato spesso carichi di bougainville fucsia o rosse.

Qui la Grecia fa diventare realtà quello a cui viene associata nell’immaginario collettivo!

L’arcipelago si estende tra le Cicladi e la Turchia e comprende oltre alle note Rodi, Kos e Karpathos anche molte isole minori idonee a soddisfare le esigenze di tutti coloro che amano una vacanza informale, a stretto contatto con il mare e la natura: sole, senso di libertà e voglia di muoversi.

La vita su queste isole scorre senza fretta, in armonia con le stagioni, gli abitanti sono ospitali e genuini, i servizi essenziali, discreti, a totale beneficio di relax e vita all’aria aperta. 

Sono le isole più vicine alle coste italiane, con cui condividono il bel mare e alcune tradizioni. L’arcipelago è formato da 11 isole; alcune famose come Corfù, Cefalonia e Zante ed alcune davvero poco battute come Erikoussa, Antipaxos e Othoni. Conosciute per la prima volta grazie ai versi di Omero e la sua “Odissea” per non parlare poi della poesia di Foscolo, sono isole molto frequentate da italiani e inglesi durante l’estate grazie ai comodi collegamenti. Sono tutte caratterizzate da una natura florida e verdeggiante (qui non mancano gli ulivi), mare cristallino e moderne infrastrutture turistiche.  Sono isole adatte a soddisfare un pubblico estremamente eterogeneo. Consigliamo sempre il noleggio di un mezzo per poter godere appieno della bellezza che ogni isola ha da offrire al suo visitatore. 

Corfù

L’isola più grande e la più varia di tutta la Grecia, non fa parte di nessun arcipelago ma ha tradizioni, storia e cultura a sé. È nota al grande pubblico per la sua rigogliosa natura ma anche per le tracce della sua storia ancora visibili. Lunga 257 km e larga tra i 12 km e i 61 km, è attraversata da catene montuose con cime che toccano i 2.500 mt, con spettacolari gole che arrivano fino al mare come quelle di Samaria, distese di sabbia dorata ad Elafonissi, nel sud ovest dell’isola, il palmeto più grande d’Europa a Vai, all’estremità orientale dell’isola.

È un luogo per tutti dove potersi trovare tra centinaia di persone e nello stesso giorno prendere il sole su una spiaggia deserta.

Piccolo arcipelago formato da 4 isole, di cui solo 3 toccate dal turismo, in quanto Skyros è complicata da raggiungere e solo per veri e propri intenditori.

Vegetazione lussureggiante, un mare di un blu profondo e infrastrutture turistiche ideali per le vostre vacanze. Solo Skiathos ha un aeroporto internazionale, ma da qui le altre due sono raggiungibili in meno di 2 ore di traghetto.

Un susseguirsi di isole tanto vicine alla costa turca da poterla spesso vedere ad occhio nudo.

Sono isole grandi che hanno conservato vive culture e antiche tradizioni, ma ognuna con modi di vita e spiagge differenti: mood vivace e spiagge di ogni tipo a Samos, soffio di poesia e calette rocciose a Lesvos, baie e spiagge idilliache a Ikaria, sapore orientale a Chios.

Isole ancora poco battute dal turismo di massa, ma non troppo lontane da Atene.  Ognuna regala paesaggi e un’atmosfera diversa: natura, spiagge, calette ma anche cultura e storia.

The port of Naxos is perhaps the most impressive port in the Cyclades group of islands. At first glance, one can admire the island’s capital Naxos Town and its medieval castle, amphitheatrically built, facing the eastern coastline of Paros.

From the boat one can see the entire western coastline of Naxos, with the steep rocky mountains plunging into the Aegean Sea. The entrance to the port of Naxos is unlike any other. What people love about naxos tours.

Loved this sailing adventure and plan to do another one in the near future. The Captain Marius was excellent with a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of sailing and taking care of his passengers. Our group gelled well and we all had fun swimming, eating on board and going out to dinner and playing cards. I would definitely do this adventure again

Working with Tour Radar was a fantastic experience! We had a self-guided tour which meant Tour Radar did all the hard stuff like finding hotels, arranging rides, having people with our names on signs at each pick-up/drop-off. It really allowed us to relax and enjoy ourselves. And the couple bumps we had along the way, Tour Radar was quick and responsive every time and either fixed the problem or, more often, it was just us being overly nervous and it had been handled the whole time.
