What are the entry requirements for Thailand?

In January 2023, the Thai government reintroduced some requirements for international travellers after China reopened its borders for the first time since 2020. These include all airline passengers over 18 providing proof of full vaccination or proof of Covid-19 recovery in the past six months (180 days). Those who are exempt from vaccination must provide proof from a doctor. 

Additionally, any travellers who are visiting from a country that may prohibit them returning home in the case of a positive Coronavirus test occurring while in Thailand must have insurance covering at least $10,000 of health care while in the country. 

Thai passport holders and those transiting through Thailand en-route to another country are exempt from these checks.

Can I travel to Thailand from the UK, and back again?

Yes. Since 18 March 2022, there are no Covid travel rules in the UK, which means that those returning from Thailand do not need to test, quarantine or fill in a passenger locator form , regardless of their vaccination status. The UK government also stopped managing any quarantine hotels at the end of March.

UPDATED THAILAND TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced that Thailand continues to welcome all international tourists in 2024 with no restrictions.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, said “International travelers arriving in Thailand are not required to show proof of vaccination.”

In addition, foreign tourists are not required to show ATK or RT-PCR COVID-19 test results.

Thailand does highly recommends COVID insurance for visitors from all countries when visiting Thailand.

After months of strict travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand is restored to normalcy by easing all travel restrictions and quarantine requirements to allow tourists to enter the country.

Travelers may enter Thailand with or without vaccination. Vaccination is not required.

No phone app for reporting or tracking is required.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Each country or territory determines its own entry and exit requirements at its borders. If you fail to meet these requirements for your destination, your embassy will not be able to assist you. The following information is provided by Thai authorities and is subject to change without notice.

The entry prerequisites differ based on the passport type you are holding for travel.

Prior to your journey, consult with your travel carrier regarding passport stipulations, as their validity rules might be stricter than those mandated by the destination country.

Ensure that your passport has at least six months of validity remaining upon your arrival in Thailand.

Other Entry Requirements

Immigration officers at the Thai border may request to see a ticket for your return or onward journey, as well as evidence of adequate funds to sustain you throughout your visit. Failure to present these documents may result in denial of entry.

Entry Stamp

Obtain your entry stamp directly from an immigration officer when entering Thailand. Avoid acquiring your visa, visa extension, or entry stamp through visa shops or travel agents within the country.

Passports that have been modified or carry fake visas and entry/exit stamps will be considered invalid. Individuals caught with such passports may face imprisonment, fines, and deportation, and might also be barred from future entry into Thailand.

Thailand Pass is no longer in effect

As of July 1, 2022, Thailand Pass is no longer required for foreign travelers entering Thailand.

Vaccinated travelers do not need to provide proof of vaccination before arriving. Unvaccinated travelers are also under no restrictions and can freely travel to Thailand.

Unless you are from one of the countries with yellow fever, you do not need to provide vaccination papers and are allowed to enter Thailand.

You cannot enter Thailand with any Australian visa. You will need to apply for a Thailand Tourist Visa to enter Thailand. If you’re coming to Thailand to study, you will need to apply for an Education Visa.

The unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated travellers without a negative test result within 72 hours of travel is required to follow the public health instructions and guidelines as deemed appropriate by the Health Control officer at the point of arrival.

Children under the age of 18 do not need a certificate of vaccination if they are travelling with fully vaccinated parents. If they travel with parents who are not fully vaccinated, they must present an RT-PCR / Professional ATK COVID-19 test result issued within 72 hours before departure.

The RT-PCR test and PCR test are different, however, any of those are accepted as long as it was issued by a certified Clinic or Hospital, containing personal information of the travelers and information of the vaccine (name, batch number, dates).

Can I travel to Thailand from UK? Entry requirements, Covid tests and quarantine rules as it leaves red list

Thailand is open for visitors - and while restrictions mean travelling to the tropical kingdom is still trickier than for most destinations, there are still great deals to be had.

Thailand is one of 47 countries that have been cut from the Government’s red list, meaning that travellers returning from the popular winter sun destination will no longer be subject to 10 nights of hotel quarantine.

The change, announced yesterday evening by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, opens up the country to travel for UK residents for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

However, there are still obstacles to consider when booking a break to the tropical kingdom.

Can I go on a quarantine-free holiday to Thailand?

Yes, but your first seven days must be spent in one of four pilot “sandbox” regions that are now open to inbound tourism before you are free to see the rest of the country.

UK holidaymakers must be fully vaccinated, stay in a specially accredited “SHA+” hotel and take two PCR tests, on day zero to one and on day six to seven.

Under-18s are exempt from proof of vaccination if travelling with parents or guardians, but children aged seven to 17 must take both PCR tests, and saliva tests are mandatory for babies and children below seven.

There are four pilot destinations which holidaymakers are free to travel to directly from their country of origin as part of the “Sandbox” programme, with more planned for later ahead of a full reopening of the country to tourism. The current list is a as follows:

• Surat Thani (Ko Samui, Ko Pha-ngan, and Ko Tao only)
• Phang-Nga (Khao Lak and Ko Yao only until 1 November when all of Phang-Nga will be open)
• Krabi (Ko Phi Phi, Ko Ngai and Railay Beach only)

There is also an extensive list of required documentation. You will need:

• A certificate of entry from ceothailand.mfa.go.th
• Confirmed return flights
• SHA+ approved hotel booking for the first seven days
• Health insurance which covers a minimum of $100,000 for duration of stay
• Proof of vaccination (for all travellers aged 18 or over)

What must vaccinated travellers do upon arrival in Thailand?

• PCR test upon arrival.
• Wait at hotel for result. After negative result is received, you are free to leave accommodation and enjoy destination for seven days.
• PCR test on day seven or eight (total cost for two mandatory tests needed in Thailand is between £50 to £100pp).
• After day seven, you are free to visit the rest of Thailand.

When will the rest of Thailand, including Bangkok, open up to direct inbound travel?

The Thai government has set out a four-stage reopening plan, with the current stage being called the Pilot Phase. Bangkok will be open for direct travel in the next phase, which will be gradually rolled out at some point in November, with the exact dates yet to be announced.

The full list of destinations in the next three phases are as follows:

Phase 1 At some point in November 10 more destinations will be opened up to inbound travel. These include: all areas of Bangkok, Krabi and Phang-Nga, and designated areas in Buri Ram (Mueang), Chiang Mai (Mueang, Mae Rim, Mae Taeng, and Doi Tao), Chon Buri (Pattaya, Bang Lamung, Na Jomtien, and Sattahip), Loei (Chiang Khan), Phetchaburi (Cha-Am), Prachuap Khiri Khan (Hua Hin), and Ranong (Ko Phayam).

Phase 2 At some point in December, 20 more provinces will be opened up. These are: Ayutthaya, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Nong Khai, Pathum Thani, Phatthalung, Phetchabun, Phrae, Rayong, Samut Prakan, Songkhla, Sukhothai, Trang, Trat, and Yala.

Phase 3 From 2022 all other provinces will be opened including: Bueng Kan, Chanthaburi, Kanchanaburi, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nan, Ratchaburi, Sa Kaeo, Satun, Surin, Tak, Ubon Ratchathani, and Udon Thani.

No more 7-day quarantine as Thailand encourages vaccinated tourists to return

Thailand is resuming its Test-and-Go tourism plan  from February, which means that fully vaccinated visitors can bypass seven-day quarantine and travel to any part of Thailand, provided they take a negative COVID-19 test on the first and fifth day of their visit.

Fully vaccinated tourists from 63 countries, including United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Germany, China, Singapore, Spain, France, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia, can soon avail of the Test-and-Go program again after the government suspended it in December due to the uncertaintity surrounding the Omicron variant.

The (almost) quarantine-free entry Test-and-Go plan requires fully vaccinated arrivals to have COVID-19 insurance cover of at least US$50,000 (£36,600), and present proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test before they depart for Thailand.

New applicants for the Test-and-Go program are also required to undergo two additional COVID-19 tests upon arrival and must, at their own expense, spend the first night and fifth night in Thailand quarantining at a government-approved hotel while awaiting their results (COVID-19 test results can take about 24 hours to be processed). Tourists must stay in their room while awaiting the result. But once the result is negative, tourists will be free to move and travel around Thailand much in the same way that any Thai citizen can.

Anyone who applied for the Test-and-Go program before December 22 and received their QR code is required to take their test on day five and six instead.

Government spokesperson Taweesilp Wisanuyothin told reporters, via The Bangkok Post , that the Test-and-Go program can resume on February 1 now that the Omicron peak has passed. The tourism program will be kept under review though, along with the Sandbox program  (Thailand's first phase of its return to tourism which allows fully vaccinated visitors from any country to travel to approved locations such as Phuket , Krabi and Ko Pha-ngan  for at least seven days before being free to travel around Thailand).

"In case there are more infections or the situation changes, there will be a re-assessment for inbound travellers and adjust toward the Sandbox scheme," Wisanuyothin said.

Travelers are also required to download the MorChana app , a tracking app where they will be reminded to take another antigen test on day five. Travelers under the age of 12 are exempt from vaccination requirements but they will be required to undergo testing.

Unvaccinated travelers in Thailand

People who are not vaccinated can also visit Thailand under the country's Alternative Quarantine program . They must apply for a Thailand Pass and travelers over the age of six must take a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test no more than 72 hours before traveling. They'll also have to have an insurance policy with at least US$50,000 coverage and pay for their quarantine accommodation before traveling to Thailand, as well as their PCR tests.

Travelers who are fully vaccinated with an approved dose (or at least one dose for travelers under the age of 18) are required to quarantine for seven days and take two PCR tests. Travelers who are not fully vaccinated must quarantine for 10 days and take three PCR tests. When they quarantine period is over, travelers will be free to travel around Thailand.

Thailand entry fee

Meanwhile, Thailand is considering introducing a tourist fee of 300 baht ($9/£7) in April, though it has yet to be approved. If introduced, the charge would be applied to all international tourists, regardless of where they are coming from and included in their airfare.. According to Thailand's tourism ministry , the revenue generated from the fee would be used to fund the sustainable management of Thailand's tourism resources, in addition to covering accident insurance for tourists who can't afford it.

"We've encountered times when insurance didn't have coverage for tourists... which became our burden to take care of them," the country's tourism minister, Yuthasak Supasorn, told Reuters .

Thailand continues to categorize provinces into dark red, red and orange zones based on their COVID-19 risk, with varied restrictions in place across each zone. Vaccinations

• Confirm primary courses and boosters are up to date as recommended for life in Britain - including for example, seasonal flu vaccine (if indicated), MMR , vaccines required for occupational risk of exposure, lifestyle risks and underlying medical conditions.
• Courses or boosters usually advised: none.
• Other vaccines to consider: Diphtheria; Hepatitis A; Hepatitis B; Rabies; Tetanus; Typhoid.
• Selectively advised vaccines - only for those individuals at highest risk: Japanese Encephalitis.

Yellow fever vaccination certificate required for travellers aged 9 months or over arriving from countries with risk of yellow fever transmission  and for travellers having transited more than 12 hours through an airport of a country with risk of yellow fever transmission.

Notes on the diseases mentioned above

• Diphtheria :  spread person to person through respiratory droplets. Risk is higher if mixing with locals in poor, overcrowded living conditions.

Risk is higher where personal hygiene and sanitation is poor.

Risk is higher for long stays, frequent travel and for children (exposed through cuts and scratches), those who may require medical treatment during travel.

• Japanese Encephalitis :  spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. This mosquito breeds in rice paddies and mainly bites between dusk and dawn. Risk is highest for long stay travellers to rural areas, particularly if unable to avoid mosquito bites.
• Tetanus :  spread through contamination of cuts, burns and wounds with tetanus spores. Spores are found in soil worldwide. A total of 5 doses of tetanus vaccine are recommended for life in the UK. Boosters are usually recommended in a country or situation where the correct treatment of an injury may not be readily available.
• Typhoid :  spread mainly through consumption of contaminated food and drink. Risk is higher where access to adequate sanitation and safe water is limited.

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes.You cannot be vaccinated against malaria.

Malaria precautions

• Malaria risk exists in the forested and hilly areas mainly towards the international borders, all year round. There is also a risk in inland areas of Surat Thani province and parts of the southern border with Malaysia. There is low to no risk in the cities of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Sot, Pattay and Phuket, the islands of Ko Samui and Ko Chang and the River Quai bridge area.
• Malaria precautions are essential. Avoid mosquito bites by covering up with clothing such as long sleeves and long trousers especially after sunset, using insect repellents on exposed skin and, when necessary, sleeping under a mosquito net.
• Check with your doctor or nurse about suitable antimalarial tablets.
• See malaria map – additional information can be found by clicking on the Regional Information icon below the map.
• High risk areas:   atovaquone/proguanil OR doxycycline is advised throughout the year.
• Low to no risk areas: antimalarials are not usually advised.
• If you have been travelling in a malarious area and develop a fever seek medical attention promptly. Remember malaria can develop even up to one year after exposure.
• If travelling to an area remote from medical facilities, carrying standby emergency treatment for malaria may be considered.

There is a risk of exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) in this country.

Please be aware that the risk of COVID-19 in this country may change at short notice and also consider your risk of exposure in any transit countries and from travelling itself.

Zika Virus Infection

This country has been categorised as having a risk of Zika (ZIKV) virus transmission.

ZIKV is mainly spread through mosquito bites. The mosquito responsible most commonly bites during daylight hours and is common in towns and cities. 

The illness is usually mild but infection during pregnancy may lead to babies being born with birth defects. There is no vaccine currently available against ZIKV.

Advice for All Travellers

You should practice strict mosquito bite avoidance at all times. Do not travel without adequate travel insurance . Seek pre-travel health advice from a travel health professional 6 to 8 weeks in advance of travel.

Additional recommendations for pregnant travellers or those planning pregnancy

If you are planning pregnancy in the very near future you should consider whether you should avoid travel to this country.

• contact your GP, obstetrician or midwife for further advice, even if you have not been unwell or had any symptoms of ZIKV infection
• use barrier methods of contraception during and after travel and for the duration of your pregnancy, even in you have not been unwell or had any symptoms of ZIKV infection
• If you develop symptoms of ZIKV infection, it is recommended that you avoid becoming pregnant for a further 2 months following your recovery
• 2 months afterwards if you are female
• 3 months afterwards if you are male or if both partners travelled

These measures reduce the chance of sexual transmission of ZIKV and/or the risk of ZIKV infection in pregnancy.

Whether you need a visa to travel to Thailand depends on a number of factors including how long you are planning to stay in Thailand and your nationality. If you hold a UK or Irish passport and are flying to Thailand for a 2-3 week holiday, you do not require a visa. You can enter under the visa exemption scheme .

Visa Exemption

Permitted to stay in Thailand for: 30 days * The visa exemption scheme allows passport holders from certain countries, including the UK and Ireland, to stay for 30 days without applying in advance for a visa. Please read the information here for full details.

* Update: May 2024 In May 2024 the Thai government discussed various proposals to make entry easier for tourists. One of the proposals is to extend the visa exemption period from 30 days to 60 days. We will add more information here once the details are confirmed.

Tourist Visa

Permitted to stay in Thailand for: 60 days Tourists from the UK and Ireland who wish to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days can apply for a Tourist Visa. Apply for the Tourist Visa at least four weeks in advance of the travel date via the official Thai E-Visa website .

If you are travelling from Ireland, please note the Royal Thai Consulate in Dublin stopped issuing visas in May 2021. Visa applications can now be processed online or via the Royal Thai Embassy, London.

'Thailand of Europe' with crystal clear waters costs as little as £18 to get to from UK

A European beach destination is being hailed as the new Thailand , with its breathtaking shores and crystal-clear waters, and it's just a three-hour flight away.

Thailand has become a global holiday-destination for its idyllic beaches, exquisite cuisine, and the infamous full moon parties that attract scores of Brits each year. Yet, the lengthy and costly journey can be a deterrent for many.

But if you're craving that tropical paradise experience without splashing the cash or spending too much time travelling, there's good news. Europe hides a gem that echoes the Thai allure, with bargain flights starting from just £18 if you're savvy with your booking.

Over on TikTok, travel enthusiast Aleksandra shared mesmerising scenes from Lumi i Shales, Albania, with her followers, captioning her video: "A hidden place in Albania that looks like Thailand."

The viral clip showcases adventurers gliding over serene waters in canoes, picture-perfect beaches, and verdant mountain scenery. The Shale River, also known as Lumi i Shales, slices through the Albanian Alps and has recently emerged as a must-visit spot in the nation.

Whether you're up for zip-lining, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, hiking, or simply lounging on the beach with a riveting read, this destination offers a laid-back atmosphere perfect for those seeking an affordable slice of heaven away from the commercial hotspots.

People didn't hesitate to express their awe, heading straight to the comments section. One user praised: "Beautiful place!" while another said: "I've been to Albania multiple times. [It's] my favourite country of all times and I've travelled quite a lot. 10/10 would recommend to everyone." Another mistaken viewer chimed in: "I THOUGHT IT WAS THAILAND."

Travel to Albania from multiple UK airports is direct, including Bristol, Birmingham , Luton and Stansted. For flexible travellers seeking super savings, flights can plunge as low as £18 in September. Indirect flights typically arrange transfers at Milan Bergamo airport in Italy they're still affordable.

Keep in mind though; navigating from Tirana Airport in Albania to the dreamy Lumi i Shales requires effort. Opt for either hiring a car or booking a coach from the airport to Lake Komani.

A four-and-a-half-hour journey which will set you back €10 on a bus departing at 5 am, or €100 for a taxi. Make sure to keep €6 handy for a round trip ferry crossing to Lumi i Shale, just an hour's sail that adds to the adventure.

Securing lodgings in Lumi i Shale might be tricky and relatively costly compared to other areas in Albania. You're looking at around £100 per night for a basic hotel room fitting up to three people.

Alternatively, consider staying in Komani where you could save money, costing approximately £60 per night.

Thailand seeking digital nomads - here's what you need to know

Thailand has joined the likes of Spain, Indonesia, Greece and Dubai in offering visas for travellers to stay and work. There are only four requirements - could you start a new life in Southeast Asia?

Like the idea of jetting off to live in Thailand?

Remote workers will now be able to stay in the country for up to five years on a digital nomad visa.

The destination Thailand visa, nicknamed the "digital nomad visa", allows foreigners to stay and work in Thailand for extended periods without worrying about immigration or tax.

Those with the multiple-entry visa are given the right to stay for 180 days a year, with an option to extend it for another 180 days, for up to five years for the cost of 10,000 baht (£213.75).

While the initial fee is £213.75, workers need to leave and re-enter the country every 180 days and pay an additional £212.20 each time.

Full details on how to apply are still pending, but some information on the requirements have been released.

To apply for the visa, you must:

• Be at least 20;
• Have enough money to pay for the visa;
• Prove you have at least £10,687 in your bank account;
• Provide proof of employment with a registered company.

Until now, digital nomads could only stay in Thailand on tourist visas for up to 60 days but it is hoped the new visa will support the government's efforts to increase tourism.

The world's your oyster...

Thailand joins a growing list of countries offering digital nomad visas or similar. Here are some of the others:

• Spain - The remote work visa gives non-EU nationals the chance to live and work in Spain for up to five years;
• Portugal - The visa allows temporary stay for up to one year but it can be renewed for up to five years;
• Italy - It gives workers the chance to stay in the country for one year with the possibility to extend;
• Croatia - Temporary stay is granted for up to a year;
• Greece - The digital nomad visa gives you legal residence as a remote worker for up to a year, after which you can apply for a residence permit which allows you to stay longer;
• Estonia - Remote workers can stay temporarily stay in the country for up to one year;
• Montenegro - The digital nomad visa is a temporal permit for non-EU remote workers and nomads can stay for up to two years in the country;
• Malaysia - The DE Rantau Nomad Pass allows foreigners to stay in Malaysia for up to 12 months in the first instance, with the option to renew for another 12 months;
• Indonesia - The visa allows for up to 180 days of stay but this may be extended further;
• Costa Rica - The nomad scheme allows international residents to work remotely in the country for up to a year, with the option to renew the visa for an additional year;
• Dubai - The remote working visa scheme is valid for one year.

The Visa Waiver Program  (VWP) enables most citizens or nationals of participating countries *  to travel to the United States for tourism or business for stays of 90 days or less without obtaining a visa. Travelers must have a valid  Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)  approval prior to travel and meet all requirements explained below. If you prefer to have a visa in your passport, you may still apply for a visitor (B) visa.

Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015

Under the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015, travelers in the following categories must obtain a visa prior to traveling to the United States as they are no longer eligible to travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who have traveled to or been present in Cuba on or after January 12, 2021 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of a VWP country).
• Nationals of VWP countries who are also nationals of Cuba, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

Requirements for Using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)

You must meet  all  the following requirements to travel to the United States on the VWP:

Travel Purpose Must be Permitted on a Visitor (B) Visa

The following are examples of activities permitted while in the United States on the VWP. In addition, transiting through the United States to other countries is generally permitted for VWP travelers.

• consult with business associates
• attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
• attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay)
• negotiate a contract

**To be eligible to travel under the VWP, British citizens must have the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

Each Traveler Must Have a Valid ESTA

In order to travel without a visa on the VWP, you must have valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval prior to boarding a U.S. bound air or sea carrier. ESTA is a web-based system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to determine eligibility to travel to the United States for tourism or business under the VWP. Visit the  ESTA webpage  on the CBP website for more information.

Updating Your ESTA

In most cases, your ESTA will be valid for two years.  You also must obtain a new ESTA if you: (1) receive a new passport, including an emergency or temporary passport; (2) change your name; (3) change your gender; (4) change your country of citizenship; or (5) need to change your responses to any of the “yes” or “no” questions on the ESTA application.

These individuals can apply for visas using regular appointment processes at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. For more information, please visit the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will interview.

If an individual who is exempt from the Act because of his or her diplomatic or military presence in one of the seven countries is denied ESTA, he or she may go to the  CBP website , or contact the  CBP information Center . The traveler may also apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection strongly recommends that any traveler to the United States check his or her  ESTA status  prior to making any travel reservations or travelling to the United States. More information is available on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website . 

Have the Correct Type of Passport

You must have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure from the United States (unless exempted by  country-specific agreements ). For families, each member of your family, including infants and children, must have a passport. 

In addition, you must have an e-passport to use the VWP. An e-passport is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. The chip can be scanned to match the identity of the traveler to the passport. E-Passports must be in compliance with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). You can readily identify an e-passport, by a symbol on the cover. See the example below. More information about e-passports is available on the DHS website .

Emergency and Temporary Passports

If you use an   emergency or temporary passport to enter the United States on the VWP, the passport must be an e-passport. This includes VWP travelers who are transiting the United States.

May I apply for a visa instead of using the VWP?

Yes, you may apply for a visitor (B) visa if you prefer to do so or if you are not eligible for VWP travel. Additionally, you need to apply for a visa if you will be traveling on a private aircraft or other non-VWP approved air or sea carrier. Review the  approved carriers list . Also, if you intend to stay longer than 90 days, then you need to apply for a visa. 

I was denied a visa under section 214(b). May I use the VWP?

A recent visa refusal for any reason could result in denial of ESTA authorization, additional review at the port of entry, or denial of admission to the United States. If you are uncertain if you qualify for VWP travel, you may apply for a visa.

Trips to Canada, Mexico, or nearby islands

If you are admitted to the United States under the VWP, you may take a short trip to Canada, Mexico, or a nearby island and generally be readmitted to the United States under the VWP for the remainder of the original 90 days granted upon your initial arrival in the United States. Therefore, the length of time of your total stay, including the short trip, must be 90 days or less. See the  CBP website . Citizens of VWP countries *  who reside in Mexico, Canada, or a nearby island are generally exempted from the requirement to show onward travel to another country *  when entering the United States. How can a country* join the VWP?

A country *  must meet various requirements to be considered for designation in the Visa Waiver Program. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

• enhanced law enforcement and security-related data sharing with the United States;
• issuing e-passports;
• having a visitor (B) visa refusal rate of less than three percent (for initial designation);
• timely reporting of both blank and issued lost and stolen passports; and
• maintenance of high counterterrorism, law enforcement, border control, and document security standards.

Designation as a VWP country *  is at the discretion of the U.S. government. Meeting the objective requirements of the VWP does not guarantee a country *  will receive VWP designation.

Entering the United States

An approved ESTA allows you to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States, but an approved ESTA does not guarantee entry into the United States. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. Learn more on the  CBP website .

Extending your stay

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to extend your stay in the United States beyond the initial admission period. You must depart the United States on or before the date on your admission stamp when you entered the United States. See Extend Your Stay on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website .

Change of status

If you enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program, you are not permitted to change status in the United States. See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

What if I am traveling to Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands?

Citizens of Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and the United Kingdom do not need a visa or ESTA to visit both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands because of the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, though they must complete Form I-736 prior to travel.  People's Republic of China Passport holders also do not need a visa if they complete Form I-736 for temporary admission into the Northern Mariana Islands. For more information on the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program,  click here

* With respect to all references to “country” or “countries” on this page, it should be noted that the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, Pub. L. No. 96-8, Section 4(b)(1), provides that “[w]henever the laws of the United States refer or relate to foreign countries, nations, states, governments, or similar entities, such terms shall include and such laws shall apply with respect to Taiwan.” 22 U.S.C. § 3303(b)(1). “It’s a good alternative to southern Europe, where it’s getting so hot,” says Kasper Egelund, CEO of design brand Vipp , which opened a guesthouse near the town of Klitmøller in northern Denmark, dubbed Cold Hawaii. 

Checking into this slick guesthouse is a steady stream of U.S. travelers drawn to the wind-swept, sandy beaches, surprisingly good surf spots, and of course, the cooler temperatures, which rarely get above 70 degrees.

 “It’s snowballing for sure,” says Egelund. 

Further south, an hour outside Copenhagen in Zealand, there’s a stretch of coastline known as the Danish Riviera, with many Copenhagers have summer homes. Recently, the local tourism board has seen an uptick in visitors, some of whom are visiting for the day while others are staying overnight checking into breezy seaside hotels such as Helenekilde. 

In Scotland —a country that is often considered an unpredictable summertime destination because of its changeable weather—visitors can’t get enough of the rolling green hills and cooler waters.

One activity that’s gaining popularity is boating, where the brand charters a boat around the Scottish Isles. Away From the Ordinary, which launched in 2018, has doubled its May bookings since last year. It’s also expanded its client base with guests streaming in from southern California, Florida, and Texas, escaping the heat back home.

“We’re definitely seeing an uptick in bookings with clients from hotter states,” says O’Hara, adding that the summer season, which previously tapered out in early September, has extended. “People are now fully booked in the second half of September.” 

Hotels, too. Gleneagles Hotel and Spa , a resort set in an historic castle an hour from Edinburgh, has always been a popular summer hot spot for travelers, but it’s now receiving a more diverse group. 

“We’ve had many American families with longstanding traditions of summering in Southern Europe now selecting Scotland as their annual destination” says Conor O’Leary, managing director. With an array of activities such as falconry, horseback riding, golf, tennis, and picnics in the country, there is certainly no shortage of outdoorsy things to do. Even if there is the odd rainfall, travelers don’t seem to groan about it like they might have done in the past. 

“People are so happy to see the green and rain,” says O’Hara.

If you’re still not quite ready to trade in pasta for fish and chips, Northern Italy has also become the destination du jour. For summer 2024, travel agency Smart Flyer has seen an increase in trips planned to cooler parts of Italy.

“Lake Como, the Dolomites, and Lake Garda are some of the most requested destinations,” says Erina Pindar, COO and managing partner of travel agency SmartFlyer. 

At Forestis , a Scandi-style ski-in-ski out property overlooking the South Tyrolean Alps in the Dolomites, they too have seen an influx of U.S. travelers. The property is geared toward winter adventurers, but it’s also an ideal summer destination, with a glimmering swimming pool and lawn dotted with sun beds, as well as outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. 

“We’ve welcomed guests who have had to cancel trips to other southern regions for various reasons, who then turn to the Dolomites as an alternative,” says Teresa Unterthiner, owner of Forestis. While the Dolomites is certainly increasing in interest ahead of the Olympics, Unterthiner also links this newfound enthusiasm to people seeking cooler locations: “We believe it could also be tied to climate-adaptive focused trips.” 

The heat waves and dire warming ocean situation have also spurred a trend in polar travel. Icy places that previously seemed unimaginable as summertime destinations are suddenly quenching travelers’ thirsts. 

Will Bolsover, CEO and founder of Natural World Safaris , which operates trips in places like Svalbard, has seen a 20 percent increase in polar travel from April through August in the past two to three years. Cruising on a boat past ice caps is definitely the polar opposite to sitting on a beach in Greece. While it’s certainly cooler, it also has the potential to be transformative, and Bolsover argues we should go to the Arctic now while we still can.

 “You can go to Italy any time in your life,” says Bolsover. “[The Arctic] is a corner of our planet where wild things roam offering a truly unique and life-changing experience.” 

Also, a guarantee that you won’t need bottles of water on-hand to pour over your head.

Hidden destination just three hours from UK is being called 'Thailand of Europe'

Is it just me or does it feel like everyone has been getting off to go and travel Asia this year? It seems like every other week there’s a leaving party all over social media for someone going backpacking.

And like, good for them but it’s just giving us all FOMO.

For the rest of us, our holidays are likely a little nearer by in Europe or even just within the pretty hot UK . But maybe we don’t actually need to miss out completely as we can have our own fake Asian travels by heading to the ‘Thailand of Europe’.

Yep, just like the ‘ new Ibiza ’ and ‘ Maldives of Europe ’ destinations, travellers are now comparing a ‘hidden’ destination just three hours away to Thailand.

The country in Southeast Asia is known for its stunning tropical beaches, delicious scran and famous Full Moon Parties. But it’s also known for being quite a long and pricey flight away.

Whereas this gem in Europe is much easier to get to on a budget and a little easier for those of us who ration out our annual leave.

Travel lover Aleksandra took to TikTok to share a ‘hidden gem in Europe that doesn’t feel real’. Sharing picturesque views and clips, she said the spot in Albania ‘looks like Thailand’.

And to be fair, it really does. The praised spot is Lumi I Shales and she shows crystal clear waters surrounded by luscious green mountains as tourists canoe past little beaches.

The area is a river that cuts through the Albanian Alps in northern Albania where people can do all sorts from hiking and zip lining to snorkelling and swimming or even just, you know, chilling on the beach.

Users commented to say it’s a ‘beautiful place’ as another said: “I’ve been to Albania multiple times. My favourite country of all time and I’ve travelled quite a lot.”

Some even admitted they ‘thought it was Thailand’ as others ‘can’t believe such beautiful places actually exist’.

Getting to Albania from the UK is relatively easy with plenty of airports offering direct flights at around three hours or less. But once you get to Tirana Airport, you’ve got a bit of a trek to get to Lumi I Shales.

You’ll want to either hire a car or book a coach and then take a ferry over to the viral spot. But if that video is anything to go by, it seems well worth it – plus it’s still easier than getting over to Thailand.

KPMG Survey: US consumer spending cuts are now hitting some essential goods and services and much-valued experiences

June 18, 2024 – As inflation continues to pressure consumers, they expect to spend less this summer on personal care products, considered an essential, and restaurants, travel and entertainment, according to the 2024 KPMG Consumer Pulse Survey, summer edition.

"Consumers are tightening their belts another notch as they hunt for discounts, and even some essentials are being impacted. We have already seen a few retailers lower prices, as they look to maintain the balance between their margins and demand,” said KPMG US Consumer and Retail Sector Leader Duleep Rodrigo. “If consumers continue to tighten their spending, retailers will want to consider whether placing more emphasis on product sizing and the experience they offer consumers may be more effective in the long run than just lowering prices.”

The KPMG survey captures the sentiment of nearly 1,100 US adult consumers nationwide on spending, inflation, shopping preferences, including direct to consumer, paid memberships and data collection, among numerous topics.

About one in five (21%) consumers anticipate spending more on personal care products this summer. A significant drop from a year ago when about one-third (32%) expected to do so. That’s not the case for grocery spending as, like a year ago, over 50% of consumers think they will spend more on groceries this summer.

Split in online spending on essentials

Anywhere from 53% to 65% of consumers plan to maintain the same amount of online spending on essentials, but only grocery – 29% expect to spend more, 18% say spend less -- and automotive categories have a net set of consumers spending more. Personal care products and prescription medicines are expected to have net less spend online.

Experiences under scrutiny

At the same time, consumers expect to reduce spending on experiences this summer as a net set of consumers plan to spend less on out of home entertainment, restaurants and travel and vacations.

Almost three times as many consumers anticipate spending less (43%) than more (15%) on out of home entertainment. Almost twice as many consumers plan to spend less (41%) than more (21%) on restaurants. Last year, a net amount expected to spend more. A net number of consumers anticipate spending less on travel and vacations. The opposite of last year’s survey finding.

On average, consumers think they will reduce their monthly spend on restaurants by 9%, entertainment and media (both in and out of home) by 8% and travel and vacations by 7%.

Data collection findings call out lack of Gen Z awareness, cross-generation concern and GenAI discomfort

Surprisingly, tech-savvy Gen Z (60%) is the least aware that companies gather data about their online activity to target them with personalized offerings.  But 75% of Gen Z are concerned about companies collecting their personal data.

• Overall, there is a consistent level of concern across all generations about companies collecting their personal data, yet more than half are willing to trade personal data for financial incentives, and 44% would do so for increased privacy controls.
• Of those who are aware companies track online activity to develop personalized offers, only 29% are comfortable with the idea of companies using GenAI to analyze their personal data. Almost half (47%) are uncomfortable.

Interest in paid memberships or subscriptions is strong across generations, with Boomers trailing, but their reasons vary.

• Gen Z is attracted by improved quality or subscriptions (57%) as the main reason to currently consider paid memberships and subscriptions over three other reasons.
• Millennials cite convenience and improved quality or services as their top reasons (59% for each); Cost savings are the top reason for Gen X (66%) and Boomers (65%)
• When it comes to making paid memberships or subscriptions more appealing, it is all about discounts, free or expedited shipping and rewards programs.
• About three-fourth of consumers are willing to pay less than $100 per month for all their memberships or subscriptions, with 45% willing to pay less than $25 a month.
