They also debuted ‘Speak To Me’ and ‘Soul With Me’ from the record, and played their recent single ‘Ghosts Again’ .
Elsewhere, Depeche Mode dedicated a live rendition of their 1990 single ‘World In My Eyes’ to their late bandmate Andy Fletcher. Black-and-white images of the musician â who died last May aged 60 â appeared on the big screens.
The final portion of the gig included outings for the classic songs ‘Enjoy The Silence’, ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ and ‘Personal Jesus’, the latter of which served as the encore closer, per Setlist.FM .
‘Sister Of Night’ made its first non-acoustic appearance in the set since 2009 (first time with Gahan on vocals), with ‘A Question Of Lust’ (Gore on vocals) returning as a full band version for the first time since 2013 (a stripped-back rendition was performed in 2017).
Later, Gahan and Gore duetted on ‘Waiting For The Night’, which hadn’t been played since 2009.

Depeche Mode Announce First New Album and Tour in 5 Years
By Jazz Monroe
Depeche Mode have announced a new album, Memento Mori , and accompanying tours of North America and Europe. The follow-up to their 2017 LP, Spirit , is out on an as-yet-unannounced date next spring, via Columbia . The North American shows kick off in Sacramento, California, in March 2023, and take in a handful of cities in the United States and Canada, culminating in a Madison Square Garden concert on April 14. A huge arena tour of Europe follows. Check out the dates below.
Memento Mori is the bandâs first album since the death in May of founding member Andy âFletchâ Fletcher . Martin Gore said of the album, âWe started work on this project early in the pandemic , and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletchâs passing, we decided to continue as weâre sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.â
Dave Gahan added, âFletch would have loved this album. Weâre really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we canât wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.â

Depeche Mode Add 29 New North American Dates to 2023 World Tour
UPDATE (Feb. 16, 2023): Depeche Mode have announced an additional 29 North American tour dates, all of which can be viewed further down the page. The group also released the new single "Ghosts Again" last week and you can listen to that here .
For those wondering, Depeche Mode will continue after the death of longtime keyboardist Andy Fletcher , who died on May 26 of this year. During a press event to announce their upcoming plans, the duo of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore revealed that a new album is en route and that the band will return to the road in 2023.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band have titled their 15th studio album, Memento Mori , with the album expected to arrive next spring, though a firm release date was not revealed as of yet. However, the album's release is expected to coincide with the band's forthcoming return to the road for their first shows in five years.
The two musicians had teased the possibility of their future, sharing a photo of themselves in the studio following Fletcher's death earlier this year. But with the album announce and tour news, it's official that they will push forward.
Martin Gore commented, “We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.”
Dave Gahan added, “Fletch would have loved this album. We’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can’t wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.”
Depeche Mode will start their touring in the U.S. with a limited series of North American dates, kicking things off on March 23. From there, the group will head back to Europe for a summer stadium tour. All dates, cities and venues can be seen below, and ticketing info can be found via their website .

Depeche Mode review â who knew synth-pop could be this colossal and life-affirming?
Twickenham Stadium, London Dave Gahan is a mic-spinning, limb-bending, theatrical marvel as the band gallop through decadesâ worth of hits. And the presence of Andrew Fletcher, the keyboardist who died last year, is touchingly felt
D epeche Mode have been thrilling stadiums for 35 years now. Immortalised in their classic tour movie 101, their first ever megashow, at the Pasadena Rose Bowl, established rules of engagement which pertain to this day. You shall sing the Thatcher-baiting chorus of Everything Counts over and over while frontman Dave Gahan holds out his microphone. You shall follow Gahanâs cue to sway your arms from side to side during Never Let Me Down Again. Still, much has changed. The four young men from Essex who appeared on the cover of 101 like a synth-pop Beatles became first a trio and then, with the premature death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher last year, a duo. While drummer Christian Eigner and multi-instrumentalist Peter Gordeno, both in the touring fold since 1998, carry the sonic weight, it is hard not seeing Fletcher waving amiably from behind his synthesiser.
Death has been a driving concern for songwriter Martin Gore since the mid-80s â alongside sex, sin and guilt â but its presence is more deeply felt in material from their sombre new album Memento Mori. The video for Ghosts Again , their best single in many years, shows the duo playing chess in homage to The Seventh Seal, while the showâs key visual motif is a skull. Fletcherâs subtly animated face fills the screens during World in My Eyes, providing a necessary moment of phone-waving communal remembrance in a stadium where diehards in old tour T-shirts mingle with a refreshing number of younger converts.
Most touchingly, Gahan and Gore seem to have rediscovered their appreciation for one another in their sixties. They donât talk much (their defining hit, after all, is called Enjoy the Silence ) but their body language speaks volumes. Note the way Gahan returns to the stage for the end of Goreâs solo performance of Soul With Meâs blue-eyed R&B to express his enthusiasm, or how tenderly their voices mesh on an intimate encore of Waiting for the Night to greet the darkening sky. Given their candidly documented history of distance, this dramatisation of their rapprochement is enormously touching.
after newsletter promotion
Depeche Mode are weirdly prone to starting shows in first gear but once the video screens snap from black-and-white to colour for Everything Counts, they gallop through decadesâ worth of hits with barely a detour. How they alone of their generation made synth-pop colossal still fascinates. The messianic techno-blues of Personal Jesus and I Feel You has obvious power but the monolithic mass of Never Let Me Down Again (recently heard in The Last of Us) or the Orwellian Stripped is still astounding: stadium rock without the rock. The pulsating glam-house of A Pain That Iâm Used To is another sui generis highlight; Just Canât Get Enoughâs peppy teen bop a delightful outlier. Really though, their success on stage comes down to Gahanâs preposterous theatricality: louche, flouncy, Jaggerish. At first resembling a Vegas vampire before stripping down to a series of colourful waistcoats, he is a bum-waggling, mic-spinning, limb-bending, rabble-rousing marvel. In the midst of death, he explodes with life.

Forty-two years after the release of their debut album, the members of Depeche Mode â well, the surviving ones â are in on the joke of their somehow having become old guys.
As Dave Gahan, 60, and Martin Gore , 61, played their synth-rock classic âEnjoy the Silenceâ on Tuesday night at the Kia Forum, images of a bejeweled skull rotated on a wall of video screens behind them; later, Gahan noticed the thousands of glowing smartphones in the crowd and said, âEverybody used to have cigarette lighters, but I guess thatâs not a thing anymore.â
That Depeche Mode would still be on the road in 2023 â Tuesdayâs concert came just days into a lengthy world tour behind the bandâs new studio LP, âMemento Moriâ â is no great surprise. Rock nostalgia is a huge business, and right now business is good for Depeche Mode, which three years ago was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and which recently had its late-â80s âNever Let Me Down Againâ prominently featured in HBOâs hit â The Last of Us .â Whatâs more, echoes of the bandâs signature style â sleek but hard-hitting, anxious yet darkly ecstatic â are detectable in music by younger acts like the Weeknd and Halsey, the latter of whom was in the audience at the Forum alongside the many OG types who looked like theyâd been at Depeche Modeâs legendary Rose Bowl gig in 1988 .
Yet none of that assured that the group would feel as vital as it did Tuesday in a gutsy two-hour performance that didnât defy age so much as question what age has to mean. âMemento Moriâ follows the unexpected death last year of Depeche Modeâs founding keyboardist, Andy Fletcher, and though the material was written before he died (of an aortic dissection), songs like âGhosts Againâ and âBefore We Drownâ ponder mortality with the same blend of vulnerability and determination that the group once applied to its thoughts on religion, alienation and sexual obsession. The result, paradoxically, is Depeche Modeâs most alive-sounding album in years.
Andy Fletcher, Depeche Mode co-founder and keyboardist, dies at 60
Fletcher helped define the sound of 1980s and â90s alternative music through hits including âJust Canât Get Enough,â âPersonal Jesusâ and âPeople Are People.â
May 26, 2022
Dressed in a suit jacket he slipped off after two songs to reveal a vest with no shirt beneath it, Gahan had a Michael Imperioli-in-âThe White Lotusâ vibe as he crooned through the moody philosophy of the new LPâs âMy Cosmos Is Mineâ and âWagging Tongue.â Gore, who wore an ash-colored jacket printed with more skulls, switched between guitar and keyboards and took over lead vocals for âSoul With Me,â a very pretty ballad from âMemento Moriâ about âheading for the ever after.â
Against the throbbing bass and blipping synths of âGhosts Again,â one of several tracks on the album Gore co-wrote with Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs, Gahan twirled across the stage like a goth(-ier) Stevie Nicks â a heartening sign that he and Gore are finding some solace in performing these songs suffused with grief.
As strong as âMemento Moriâ is, nobody came to the Forum just to hear new stuff. Rounded out by Christian Eigner on drums and Peter Gordeno on keyboards, Depeche Mode luxuriated in the sensual gloom of oldies including âWalking in My Shoes,â âPreciousâ and âWorld in My Eyes,â during which a vintage photo of a young Fletcher appeared on the video screen. âI Feel Youâ was grinding and lascivious, âJohn the Revelatorâ funky and clanging; âA Pain That Iâm Used toâ rode a morbid disco groove that wouldnât quit.
Lana Del Reyâs most personal album yet may just be her best
On her sprawling and self-referential new LP, Del Reyâs lyrics deliver a staggering blend of the profound and the vernacular.
March 26, 2023
Gahan and Gore began their encore with a bluesy acoustic rendition of âCondemnationâ before revving up the chipper synth-pop of the bandâs first big hit, âJust Canât Get Enough.â Then they closed with âNever Let Me Down Againâ and the happily inevitable âPersonal Jesus,â both pumping with fresh blood you hope for their sake is still in supply by the time this tour circles back to Southern California in December for another six (!) arena dates.
âL.A., letâs see those hands,â Gahan told the crowd as the show reached its emotional climax. He took a moment to admire the sea of waving arms, then added, âIt never gets old.â

Having sold more than 100 million records and played to more than 35 million fans worldwide, Depeche Mode remains an ever-evolving and singularly influential musical force. No DC date, sadly!
There’s always fall! Plus there’s a block of time late April / early May where more dates (in theory) could be added, but I’m ever the optimist.
That DC date materialized, and it’s almost here! https://parklifedc.com/2023/02/24/preview-depeche-mode-capital-one-arena-10-23-23/

In speaking about Memento Mori, Martin Gore commented, âWe started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletchâs passing, we decided to continue as weâre sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.â Dave Gahan added, âFletch would have loved this album. Weâre really looking forward to sharing itwith you soon, and we canât wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.
