Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Dodge Journey’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

Dodge Journey Check Engine Light

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your Journey’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your vehicle.

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Pulling Trouble Codes

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey . Some of them are Dodge specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Dodge Journey’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:

  • P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
  • P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
  • P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
  • P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your Journey’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Dodge Journey

How to pull trouble codes from the dodge journey

You can either pull the trouble codes from your Journey’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the Journey’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

dodge journey 2011 check engine light

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your Journey to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free .

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your Journey.

There are three ways to reset the Dodge Journey’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed.

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your Journey’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your Journey’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Dodge Journey is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your Journey’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Dodge Journey through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored.

Here’s a list of the emissions regulations of each State .

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your Journey with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.

You certainly can’t drive the Dodge Journey with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

Why is My Check Engine Light Flashing?

A flashing Check Engine Light typically indicates a serious issue with your Journey and should not be ignored.  It usually indicates a catastrophic misfire that can dump raw fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter and cause backfiring.  Do not drive your vehicle with a flashing check engine light .

6 Causes of a Dodge Check Engine Light (+What to Do)

dodge journey 2011 check engine light

An illuminated check engine light on your Dodge means your vehicle needs attention.

The light, however, could activate for several reasons, including engine problems caused by a loose gas cap , a failing catalytic converter , or faulty spark plug wires.

We’ll discuss the six main causes of an illuminated check engine light on your vehicle, what to do if your check engine light is on, and answer some other common questions.

What causes the dodge check engine light to turn on.

  • What to Do if Your Dodge Check Engine Light Turns On?

Will the Check Engine Light Reset Itself?

Is it safe to drive with a dodge check engine light on, how much does a dodge check engine light diagnosis cost.

Let’s illuminate the dashboard warning light issue.

Dashboard warning light triggers are usually standard across Dodge models – including the Dodge Grand Caravan and most Dodge Ram vehicles. Here are some of the most common issues:

1. Gas Cap Problems

A loose, broken, or missing gas cap can trigger the check engine light on your dash.

Why? The gas cap helps maintain the fuel pressure inside the fuel tank. When faulty, it could affect the fuel system and reduce fuel economy. Your car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) will register the P0440 trouble code if there are issues with the gas cap.

Note : You can use an OBD II scanner to read the code and confirm this. Most Dodge and Ram Vehicles are compatible with it.

2. Failing Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust system. But it tends to clog over time , reducing how well it can remove carbon monoxide from the exhaust gases.

A clogged catalytic converter can trigger the engine warning light when the buildup of carbon monoxide emissions in the exhaust system causes overheating and poor engine performance. If your clogged catalytic converter isn’t functioning properly, the OBD II scanner will show a P0420 engine code.

3. Faulty Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires

When you turn on your car, the spark plugs (and spark plug wires) receive high-voltage electricity through the ignition coil. Each spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture that starts the engine.

A dirty or worn spark plug (or bad ignition coil) may lead to an engine misfire (and poor engine performance), which triggers the check engine light. Faulty spark plugs can also impact your fuel economy. Your ECU will register a P0300 or P0171 code if your spark plugs or plug wires are the issue.

4. Faulty Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor)

When the ECU receives inaccurate readings from the oxygen sensor, it supplies the engine with the wrong amount of fuel and air, leading to an engine misfire, poor engine performance, and bad fuel economy.

Why does this happen? The oxygen sensor is constantly exposed to hot exhaust gases, which results in its deterioration over time. Depending on the specific oxygen sensor problem, the P0175 , P0713, P0171, or P0162 check engine light codes may appear.

5. Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)

The mass airflow sensor (MAF) sensor measures how much air enters the engine. When it malfunctions, the engine receives the wrong fuel-air mixture, resulting in a misfire and an active CEL. The engine code for a faulty MAF is P0101 , but several other check engine light codes often appear simultaneously.

6. A Vacuum Leak

The vacuum system pushes gas fumes through the engine to reduce harmful emissions. It also provides a vacuum environment to control RPMs.

If the vacuum system leaks , unmetered air enters the combustion chamber. This affects the air-fuel mixture, resulting in an engine misfire and an active CEL. The ECU will register a P2279 diagnostic trouble code if this happens.

Now that you know some likely culprits for your illuminated check engine light, let’s look at what to do next.

What to Do If Your Dodge Check Engine Light Turns On?

Besides reading the specific error code, the key trick to assessing the CEL severity on your Dodge Grand Caravan or another model is observing the way it turns on. You may see a flashing light, a constant light, or even a check engine light that only comes on occasionally.

1. Check Engine Illuminates under Certain Circumstances

Take note of any performance change when the check engine light turns on. If the change is significant, it’s likely that a component is about to fail. So, get your vehicle looked at soon.

2. Check Engine Light Is Constantly On

If your check engine light remains illuminated, it’s certain something needs fixing or that a service is due. While your vehicle may perform without any issues , it’s best to take it to a professional mechanic as soon as possible.

3. Check Engine Light Is On with Performance Issues

If you notice a constant performance drop in addition to your illuminated check engine light, then it’s likely your vehicle is in “limp mode.” Modern cars use this mode to limit the speed and engine power to ensure vehicle protection. So, get your car to a mechanic ASAP to diagnose the check engine code.

4. Check Engine Light Blinks While Driving

A red warning light or a flashing check engine light usually indicates a severe problem with your car. So, it’s best to pull over, turn off the ignition, and call for assistance.

Before you get a check engine light diagnosis, here are some other things you should know.

Typically, the check engine light on your Dodge turns off automatically when the corresponding problem is fixed.

However, if you turn on your ignition and the yellow light is still active, you should take your Dodge vehicle back to the mechanic. It’s likely the underlying diagnostic trouble code hasn’t been properly addressed.

The check engine light may indicate several issues with your vehicle, each varying in severity. So, it’s not easy to assess whether driving with the yellow light on is safe or best for vehicle protection.

What should Dodge owners do?

The key trick is to get specific – find out what the registered check engine light error code on your car means. Pinpointing the problem is critical to understanding whether it’s safe for Dodge owners to drive or not.

However, if you have a flashing check engine light, stop driving immediately and contact a mechanic .

Typically, the cost of a check engine light diagnosis ranges from $80-$180.

However, the cost of fixing the issue will vary, depending on the problem. A faulty oxygen sensor or loose gas cap won’t set you back much, but a catalytic converter replacement could cost up to $2500.

So, if you don’t have a vehicle protection plan, you may want to invest in one to save money on future check engine light services.

Final Thoughts

In many cases, you needn’t panic if your check engine light is triggered. But if it’s a flashing light or you notice a marked difference in your vehicle performance, the problem needs immediate attention.

What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

In a few words: It’s a warning light that alerts the driver about any type of engine problems . In some vehicles, the light comes in two colors: yellow to indicate minor problems and red to indicate serious problems.

The check engine light is part of every vehicle that has an electronic engine management system, either an integral one or only for fuel ignition. Its function is to alert the driver about any type of engine problems .

dodge journey 2011 check engine light

Depending on the type of failure, the light may either blink or remain constantly lit. If the problem is serious, your Journey will be in a “emergency” state that will prevent you from accelerating the engine above certain speed limit, forcing you to drive at low speed in order to avoid further damages.

The check engine light can alert you about some failures but not all of them. It will depend on how complex the electronic control unit of your Journey is.

To properly diagnose the failure of your Journey, it is important to have a suitable scanner that is compatible with the brand and model of your car. The scanner will show the engine fault code that the computer has detected, which is related to a certain problem that is affecting the engine.

The most common check engine light causes of your Journey and how to detect them

  • Ignition cylinder problems: irregular engine running.
  • Problem with exhaust gas oxygen sensor (Lambda probe): irregular engine running, there are misfires when accelerating abruptly or driving at low revs. It may be caused by a sensor fault or a failure of the catalytic converter.
  • Problems with the engine intake (air or fuel): engine running may be rough or irregular.
  • Problems with the electrical system: sometimes it is easy to identify the cause but other times it may take days of testing to find the source of the problem.
  • Sensor malfunction: It affects engine running or stops running completely.
  • Wiring problems: contact failure, cut wires, short circuits.

Indicator status and severity

The check engine light can behave in different ways. Here we show you the most common light signals so you can know what is happening to your Journey:

  • The light turns on when you switch on the ignition key and then it turns off : It’s normal. It’s used to verify that the light itself is working and the bulb is not burned out.
  • The light blinks and then it turns off (cyclically) : This indicates that the car had a problem at one point but it is not happening at the moment.
  • The light is steady: This indicates that there is a problem but is not so serious as to stop driving your vehicle.
  • The light blinks continuously: This indicates that there is a critical problem. Usually, you should stop driving your vehicle.

Keep in mind that if you have a top-quality scanner, you will be able to verify all the car sensors , avoiding blind maintenance which is a pointless waste of money. Another recommendation is to check the owner's manual , if you want to know more about the fault codes that the scanner will detect.

gas caps

A check engine light can indicate a broad spectrum of problems with your 2010 Dodge Journey. If you have a flashing check engine light, turn off the engine immediately to prevent potential motor damage. Whereas a steady check engine light may mean you merely need to tighten you gas cap next time you stop in order to reset the service engine soon light. The video above shows how to locate the on board diagnostics OBD plug location on your 2010 Journey, how to read the trouble codes and how to reset or clear the check engine light using a scanner on your Journey.

Is it OK to drive with a check engine light on? Intermittent Check Engine Light: If the check engine light on your 2010 Journey is not steady, try to take note of the conditions when this happens. For example, does it happen when you accelerating, driving on the highway or does it appear at low speeds? This will help your mechanic evaluate the issue. Steady Check Engine Light: If your check engine light is on every time you operate your Journey, you need to have it checked as soon as possible, especially if you notice performance problems or unusual noises. Flashing Check Engine Light: If your check engine light is flashing, stop driving your Journey and have it towed to your nearest mechanic – a blinking check engine light means you probably have a very serious problem with your car and you risk ruining your engine by driving it. If you are unsure about what your diagnostic trouble codes mean after finding the Journey OBD port location and scanning the codes; have your Journey diagnosed by a professional automotive technician.

What to Look into If Your Dodge Journey Engine Is Showing the Horrible Check Engine Light

Few things are more frustrating for a car owner than seeing the check engine light illuminate on the dashboard. This warning light can signal a variety of issues, some of which may require immediate attention. For owners of the Dodge Journey, understanding what could be causing this light to turn on can help you address the problem more effectively. In this blog post, we’ll explore some common causes of the check engine light in a Dodge Journey engine and provide insights into how to resolve these issues.

Faulty Oxygen Sensor

One of the most common reasons for a check engine light is a faulty oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor monitors the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust and sends this information to the car’s computer. This data helps the engine adjust the air-fuel mixture to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.

Symptoms of a Faulty Oxygen Sensor

  • Poor Fuel Economy : A malfunctioning oxygen sensor can cause the engine to use more fuel than necessary, reducing your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
  • Rough Idling : You might notice your Dodge Journey idling roughly or stalling more frequently.
  • Increased Emissions : A faulty sensor can lead to higher emissions, which can cause your vehicle to fail emissions tests.

How to Fix It

Replacing a faulty oxygen sensor is a relatively straightforward process and can be done with basic tools. However, if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, a professional mechanic can handle the replacement for you. Regularly checking and replacing oxygen sensors can prevent long-term damage to your Dodge Journey engine.

Catalytic Converter Issues

Another common issue that can trigger the check engine light is a problem with the catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is an essential part of the exhaust system, reducing harmful emissions by converting them into less harmful gas.

Symptoms of Catalytic Converter Problems

  • Reduced Engine Performance : If your catalytic converter is clogged or failing, you may notice a decrease in your vehicle’s performance.
  • Rattling Noise : A damaged catalytic converter can produce a rattling noise, especially when the car is started.
  • Dark Exhaust Smoke : Excessively dark smoke from the exhaust is a clear indicator that the catalytic converter may not be functioning properly.

Catalytic converter issues often require a professional diagnosis and replacement. Ensuring that your engine is well-maintained and addressing issues like misfires or a faulty oxygen sensor promptly can help extend the life of your catalytic converter.

Additional Troubleshooting

If the check engine light persists, performing a compression test can provide further insights into the engine’s condition. Knowing how to do a compression test can help you identify issues like worn piston rings or a blown head gasket, which can also trigger the check engine light.

Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can prevent major engine problems in your Dodge Journey. Additionally, staying informed about potential problems with other vehicles, such as understanding common issues with the Hyundai Sonata engine , can provide broader knowledge for vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting.

In conclusion, while the check engine light can be alarming, understanding the common causes can help you take the right steps to address the issue. Whether it’s a faulty oxygen sensor, a problematic catalytic converter, or another engine issue, knowing what to look for and how to fix it can keep your Dodge Journey running smoothly. This morning my check engine light came on. I shut everything down, checked under the hood, everything looked fine. Started it back up, no weird noises, no smoke, no roughness or change in performance/response. Dealership isn't open today to check anyway, so I'm driving 'til Monday regardless. Came on every time as I did shopping today and whatnot. This afternoon, it went out.

I had something like this happen once on my 03 Sebring (something weird like left exhaust was lean), and there was a sequence to get the OBD codes off the odometer. Anybody know if there's a way to get them on the Journey? Or is this a take it to the shop situation? I'd like to be able to find the error code and at least have an idea what happened. I'll probably take it in next week anyway, just in case it is something that could turn into a warranty claim down the road ... but it would ease my mind for the rest of the weekend to know what it was.

I kind of expected a check engine light to come with some kind of message in the EVIC ... but apparently not. Seems to me the logical place for it, no?

if a code registered it would be under messages on the evic. you could take it to a auto parts store like auto zone or advance auto they could check it with their meter they use to do it for free.

It lit up again this afternoon - still 0 messages in the EVIC. Going to take it to the dealership tomorrow to get it checked. Wouldn't be the gas cap, unless they magically come loose on their own. I last filled up last Monday - so 5 days to register it loose seems odd. And I always give it at least 5 clicks when I put it back on.

Chris, My starter would make a funny noise when starting every once in a while and light would come on for a couple days. Dealer said it didn't leave a code. Had RRT 11-069 applied for long crank time. Hasn't happened since. Hope it isn't something too serious.

Well, I'll find out soon enough. Whatever it is, it's all under warranty. I've always said with new vehicles it's best to get all the breakage and problems done early ... so you don't suffer from "6 days after the warranty is up" syndrome like our big, expensive printer/copier/fax/scanner at work! LOL (Seriously, last week, SIX days past the day it was activated, the SECOND one of these things developed problems. Gooooooooo Xerox! Not.)

If the light does not come on when first put in the run position then it needs to be checked. Of course a few seconds after starting the light should go out. See below for the owners manual explanation.

The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is part of

an onboard diagnostic system, called OBD, that

monitors engine and automatic transmission control

systems. The light will illuminate when the key is in

the ON/RUN position, before engine start. If the bulb

does not come on when turning the key from OFF to

ON/RUN, have the condition checked promptly.

Certain conditions, such as a loose or missing gas cap,

poor fuel quality, etc., may illuminate the MIL after

engine start. The vehicle should be serviced if the light

stays on through several of your typical driving cycles. In

most situations, the vehicle will drive normally and will

not require towing.

Mine came on last week. Autozone checked it out and it turned out to be the knock sensor. It's either a faulty sensor or the wireing. I don't here a knock in the engine. Does anyone know where to find this thing and how to replace it. The part is 78 dollors at a/z and like 118 at the dealer,(plus labor that is 400 dollors or more). Not getting any help from Dodge or Autozone, and there are no books or manuals out for the Journey yet. I am haveing trouble finding info on the web as well.

Not knowing the age or KMS of your Journey, my only suggestion is to get it in to the dealer just to be sure that is the right repair and go from there.

It’s not too often I hear of a Knock Sensor issue but if it really is that, you need to keep in mind that you have to pull the upper intake manifold to get to the sensor which a lot bigger of a job than you'd expect.

Something is SERIOUSLY wrong. It's off. Lol.

Yes, it's normal. In the ON position, the BCM thinks the car is fully on, but sees the engine is off. All cars do that.

Think of the days pre-push button. You would turn the key to start, then it would spring back to ON.

Check Engine Light On problems of the 2011 Dodge Journey

Six problems related to check engine light on have been reported for the 2011 Dodge Journey. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2011 Dodge Journey based on all problems reported for the 2011 Journey.

1 Check Engine Light On problem

We purchased this vehicle used, back in February. Over the last several months the vehicle had sporadically shut off while driving. The engine completely stops while moving. Some times it takes multiple attempts to turn it back on after shutting down and other times it will turn back on. We have already had the car looked at and had some recall work done to it, but this keeps happening even so. It happened again today while going 40 mph, 2 seconds before the car stalled the check engine light came on and then the car stopped while driving. Thankfully the person behind me was not following too close because they almost hit me when the car stopped moving. I was driving on a city street with moderate traffic around me, so I am lucky that no one hit me when the car came to a complete stop. I was able to put the car in park and put my hazards on, while waiting to restart the car. This isn't the first time this has happened and I am sure this won't be the last.

2 Check Engine Light On problem

While driving on the highway the car just shut off has done this multiple times with no check engine lights at all.

3 Check Engine Light On problem

Check engine light with code for misfire on cylinder 4. Spark plugs and coils replaced. VIN not listed with other 3. 6l v6 that has extended warranty for same issues for replacement of cylinder head. Check engine light comes on during low speed or stopped and rough engine ignition. Vehicle is a 2011 Dodge Journey 3. 6l v6.

4 Check Engine Light On problem

I was driving on the freeway to work and the engine shut off. I lost power steering, power braking, ability to accelerate or really drive the car at all. All I could do was try to safely navigate an uncontrollable vehicle to the shoulder and hope I wasn't hit in the process. The check engine light came on, in addition to other warning lights (I think they were the tire pressure light, the vehicle traction control light and another indicator that looks like a lightning bolt). The car eventually restarted, but had problems driving and would start to cut out when it idled. We took it back to Dodge, they ran diagnostics but couldn't find any issues. After a lot of pressure, they replaced the main computer chip in the system. This was after replacing another minor part that didn't change the issue. This seemed to work for a few months, but then the problem began happening again. This time the engine was even more sluggish and the whole car would shake when you tried to accelerate. There was no power, even though the engine was running. Then, it would cut out again and the same warning lights came on. We are taking it back to Dodge again today to see what they can do.

5 Check Engine Light On problem

The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Journey. The contact was traveling 55 to 60 mph when the engine stalled. The check engine warning light illuminated after the failure. The vehicle restarted after the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer three times. The manufacturer was also contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 16,000 and the current mileage was 17,500.

6 Check Engine Light On problem

The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle also hesitated to accelerate from stops. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that a wiring harness shaft near the head cylinder was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 15,000 and the current mileage was 17,383.

COMMENTS

  1. Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

    1. Fix and Wait. The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed. Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle's check engine light to shut down.
