Testing Out the Best Translation Apps for Travelers

Did you hear the one about the traveler who told a Parisian waitress that he was pregnant instead of full? He could have used a good translation app. Here's what T+L tech correspondent Tom Samiljan uncovered while testing the latest tools throughout Europe and Asia.

Google Translate

How it Works: Google will generate a written translation for anything that you type, speak, photograph, or draw on your touch screen. For nearly half of its supported languages, it also offers audio translations — and the number keeps growing. Bonus: a new feature listens for two languages at once, providing the spoken and text translations for both sides of a conversation in real-time.

The Good: Google's translations are incredibly comprehensive — if occasionally clunky. For example, a French sign saying " Cedez le passage " yielded the English "You do not have the priority."

The Bad: When it comes to Asian characters, results can be nonsensical: on a Chinese menu, "eggplant with basil" somehow became "nine eggplant."

Number of Languages: 133, with 70 offering voice translations (at last count).

Off-Line Capability: Downloadable translation packs are available for 60 languages.

Overall Assessment: It may not be perfect, but we love the number of languages — and the price.

Free; Android, iOS

How it Works: Beyond translating typed and spoken phrases, this app lets you slow down (or speed up) the corresponding audio playback so that you can work on accurate pronunciation. You can also save translations for recurring reference by marking them as favorites or sending them to yourself in an e-mail. Tip: saving your translations in Evernote can help you create a personalized phrase book.

The Good: Translations were fast and accurate, and the time-saving ability to bookmark translations spares you from looking up the same phrase (e.g., "Is it spicy?") over and over again.

The Bad: Phonetic English spellings for languages with different alphabets — like Hebrew or Arabic, for instance — were nearly impossible to pronounce.

Number of Languages: Over 100 total, with 38 offering voice translations.

Off-Line Capability: Translate between 38 languages offline without language-pair restrictions.

Overall Assessment: Better for audio than text translations; too bad it doesn't support a larger number of languages with voice.

Subscriptions from $2.99; Android, iOS

How it Works: Hold your phone's camera up to anything written in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean and it will produce an English translation on the spot. The app stores a history of your translations and saves your favorites, so you can easily retrieve the directions to your hotel for a local cab driver. You're limited to 10 daily translations with the free app; upgrade for unlimited use ( $11.99 ).

The Good: The photo translation is the fastest and most accurate around. It had no problem identifying "eggplant with basil" on the same Chinese menu that stumped Google Translate.

The Bad: The interface is highly sensitive to movement and difficult to focus. Another annoyance: only being able to see a few translated words at a time.

Number of Languages: Three (more languages are on the way).

Off-Line Capability: Everything but the supplemental language packs works off-line.

Overall Assessment: Without the ability to translate English into any other language, you'll need other apps.

The team at The Points Guy loves to travel, but now is not the time for unnecessary trips. Health officials note that the fastest way to return to normalcy is to stop coming in contact with others. That includes ceasing travel. We are publishing some travel guides because we should all use this time to think about and plan our next adventures. TPG doesn't advise booking trips for travel until later this year -- and even then, be mindful of cancellation policies.

Not multilingual? You don't actually need to be when using these handy translation apps that can help you read, speak and understand the local language wherever your points and miles take you. With voice, text and camera translation, these apps help break down language barriers -- and some even work offline when you don't have internet access. You'll be able to order food, hail taxis and communicate with locals by tapping your phone, for a stress-free, enjoyable experience when traveling abroad.

Here are TPG's picks for nine of the best translation apps you can download today:

One of the most popular translation apps in the world, iTranslate has almost 350,000 ratings on both iTunes and Google Play — most of them with four and five stars. There's also a special version for Apple Watch. The basic app includes a phrasebook with predefined, useful phrases and translations in more than 100 languages. A pro version ($5.99 per month or $49.99 for a yearly subscription) features language packs to download and use offline, website translation (including a Safari extension), camera translation, voice-to-voice conversations (now available offline in four languages) and verb conjugations. Download the basic version for free on iTunes or Google Play .

You can use handwriting (where you draw text or characters instead of typing) in 95 languages. For camera translation in 90 languages, you can point your camera for an instant translation of, say, a menu. Two-way instant speech translation is available in 43 languages. Google Translate is simple to use too, with icons at the top you can click to draw, take a photo, speak or type. Download for free on iTunes or Google Play .

If you want to sound savvy abroad, TripLingo will help you communicate like the locals and understand their culture. Start by selecting a country (there are more than 100 countries, from Nepal to New Zealand, Senegal to Spain, Indonesia to Israel and beyond) and then downloading the pack for your desired destination. For example, if you're heading to Spain, you'll have a voice translator that will translate your voice into Spanish, an image translator, a selection of key Spanish phrases, a Wi-Fi dialer so you can make calls from abroad (you can add credits starting at $10), and even a section about tipping, safety and cultural norms to ensure you'll blend right in.

There are suggested phrases you can use for a little humor and fun, nightlife and even flirting -- all can be downloaded and accessed offline. A pro version with added phrases, a $3 Wi-Fi call credit, a free call to a live translator and audio lessons starts at $19.99 per month . Or, if you find yourself in a sticky situation while abroad and need serious translation assistance, access to a live translator starts at $3 per minute. Download the basic version for free on iTunes or Google Play .

Translate your voice into 90 languages and dialects with SayHi. The app allows you to record your voice and then translates it into the language you've selected. You can play your translation in the voice of either a woman or a man, and adjust the speed to your liking. If you're in a noisy environment, you can also type in the app instead of speaking into the microphone. The app is only available when you're connected to the internet through Wi-Fi or have at least a 3G data connection. Download for free on iTunes and Google Play .

Specializing in Asian languages, Papago translates between English and Korean, Japanese, Chinese (simplified/traditional), Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai, as well as Russian, German, Italian and Spanish. Translations are available in the form of text and voice, and you can also have a conversation using the app in which two people can simultaneously speak and have the app automatically translate the respective languages. Photo translation, handwriting translation and offline translation are all available. There is a dictionary/phrasebook, too. You can download a special section just for kids. Download for free on iTunes and Google Play .

Microsoft Translator

Translate text, voice and photos between English and more than 60 languages with Microsoft Translator. The app is ideal for business travelers, with a multi-person conversation translation feature where you connect your devices and can actually speak with as many as 100 people at a time in different languages. The split-screen function lets you see a phrase while someone sitting across from you can read the translation. Language packs are available for offline translation. With translation guides and pronunciation help (the app is particularly useful for Chinese), you can also learn how to properly speak some of the phrases you're translating instead of relying only on the voice function. Download for free on iTunes or Google Play .

Waygo only translates from English to and from Chinese, Japanese and Korean, but it can be a lifesaver if you're stuck without Wi-Fi, as it's available entirely offline. The app is best used with the instant camera — just point at signs and menus and then see your translation. Foodies will find Waygo particularly useful, as you can go into the food picture mode after translating a menu item to better understand what you're about to order. The basic version includes 10 free translations per day, and the upgraded version, which includes unlimited translations, costs $6.99 for just one of the three languages or $11.99 for all three. Download the basic version for free on iTunes and Google Play .

iTranslate Voice

Similar to SayHi, this app translates audio into more than 40 languages, allowing you to ask a local for directions, tell a taxi driver an address or say almost anything you'd like in another language. You record yourself and then your voice is immediately translated into your chosen language. You can record someone's response in their language, and the app will then translate it into your language. You can also connect two devices and have easy back-and-forth conversations with someone who doesn't speak your language. The pro version comes with a custom phrasebook, unlimited translations and transcripts and no ads for $39.99 per year. Or, download the basic version (with limited translations) for free on iTunes .

Speak and Translate

If you're willing to pay for a translation app and are interested in translating less common languages, consider Speak and Translate, which translates to 117 languages for text and 54 languages for voice. It integrates seamlessly with iCloud, allowing you to sync your translation history across all your Apple devices. You can also change the voice speed and select the gender you want to read your translations. Download and pay $6.99 per month or $38.99 per year (a short three-day or seven-day trial may be included) on iTunes .

So, you’ve started learning a new language and you’re now confident with speaking the language. To reward yourself, you book a flight to the country whose language you’re learning, only to realize that you’re maybe not as fluent as you thought.

That is the true and (slightly) sad story of what happened to me when I took a vacation to Madrid after four months of Spanish classes. Trust me, spontaneous conversation in a foreign language is way different from listening and repeating phrases off of an audio lesson.

It was during that time when I thought, oh how I wish I had a translation device with me! To save you the blushes of experiencing the same thing, I’ve curated this list of the top 13 real-time translation devices for you!

How real-time translation devices work

Real-time translation devices come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. There are classic handheld translators , fashionable translator earbuds and headsets , inconspicuous pen translators , and even AI-powered translator devices that are constantly updated.

In addition to translating real-time conversations, the T11 also allows users to record (and translate) voice memos, features camera translation for 45 languages, and comes with noise-canceling technology to ensure accurate recordings and translations. For those not in the know, Pocketalk is one of the most reliable brands when it comes to real-time translation devices. And perhaps none are as iconic as the brand’s flagship Pocketalk Classic Language Translator .

As the name suggests, this device is a handy pocket translator that recognizes a wide range of languages and dialects from 133 different countries. More impressively, it can even detect jargon and slang terms, making it one of the most accurate instant translation devices on the market.

It offers both audio and text translation capabilities and comes with respectable battery life (although it isn’t the longest-lasting device on this list). The major weakness is that it needs to be connected to the internet to function properly.

That said, if accuracy is your main concern, then Pocketalk Classic is arguably one of the best options for you.

  • Its compact design makes it easy to store and bring around

How to choose the best real-time translation devices that fit you

Man using wireless translation device

There you have it: 14 of the best real-time translation devices for your travels! The next burning question is how do you choose the best one?

To pick a real-time translation device that meets your requirements, it really boils down to a few main things.

Supported languages

Before diving into cool features and design, the most fundamental factor when it comes to choosing a translation device is simply the languages that are supported. As you can see from the list above, there are some translator devices that support a wide array of languages, and some that have a more compact list.

Know what languages each device offers before buying it. After all, you wouldn’t want to spend hundreds on a device only to find out later that it doesn’t support your target language!

Translation accuracy

The second most important thing to consider when shopping for real-time translation devices is the accuracy of the translations. For this, I recommend looking for devices that are either powered by or supported by recognized translation programs and search engines.

Offline connectivity and battery life

While we currently live in a world where you can probably find a WiFi hotspot every few miles, you may want to opt for specific devices that offer offline translations . That’s because you never know when you might find yourself stuck without internet connectivity!

In addition, you’ll also want a device that can last for as long as you need it to. The last thing you want is for your device to power down mid-conversation!

Type of device

As mentioned earlier, there are many different types of real-time translation devices. When looking for one that suits you, consider the scenarios in which you will make sure of them.

For example, while handheld translator devices like Pocketalk are often the most reliable, they’re not as convenient as, say, portable translator earbuds like Timekettle .

If you’re one who constantly leaves stuff behind, I suggest opting for the latter for peace of mind!

Added features

Consider the added features of your real-time translation device before you “add to cart”.

Are you satisfied with a device that only provides audio translations or do you prefer something that can facilitate a full-blown conversation? Do you need built-in cameras to translate signs and restaurant menus? If you’re buying a pen translator, do you need a dictionary function?

These are all important questions to ask yourself.

Finally, find a real-time translation device that suits your budget. Remember, flashier devices with more functions often cost upwards of 100 dollars, so if you don’t have that kind of money to spare, you’ll need to find a different device that meets your needs.

That said, sometimes the most practical devices, like the CheetahTALK CM , are in fact the more economical choices!

How to Use Google Translate for Traveling in Foreign Countries (Get the Most Out of Your International Trip)

Traveling to foreign countries is an enriching experience, offering an opportunity to immerse oneself in new cultures, savor diverse cuisines, and marvel at breathtaking landscapes. However, language barriers can often act as an obstacle, making communication and navigation a tad challenging. Enter Google Translate – a digital tool that has revolutionized the way travelers interact with the world. In this guide, we’ll delve into using Google Translate while traveling, focusing on standout features like image translation and uncovering hidden gems you may not know about.

Google Translate, available as a website and mobile app, is a dynamic tool designed to bridge linguistic gaps. It supports over 100 languages and is an invaluable companion for globetrotters, offering more than just word-for-word translations.

Translate Text By Typing into App

One of Google Translate’s core functions is translating text. With the app’s text translation feature, you can effortlessly decipher menus, signs, and written communication. Simply type in the text or copy-paste it, and choose the source and target languages.

Image Translation with Google Lens – Our Favorite Feature

A standout feature that sets Google Translate apart is image translation. The app’s camera mode transforms your smartphone into a magic lens. Q: Are Language Translators Better Than Google?

Generally, yes. It may depend on the brand, but most translators use more than one translation engine. This ensures that it can get the best result for your chosen language. Furthermore, since language translators are separate devices, they help you save battery on your smartphone.

Q: Are There Language Translators That Don’t Require an Internet Connection?

Yes, there are language translator models that can work without being connected to the internet. However, that functionality would typically require you to download your chosen language group first before using it. Furthermore, you need to update it occasionally to get accurate results.

Q: Can I Download a Translator on My Smartphone?

Yes, you can. Google Translate offers a free app you can use for translation. However, these translators usually require either a consistent internet connection or a downloaded database. Furthermore, they can be quite fiddly to use versus a dedicated translator device.

If you’re a frequent traveler or work with non-native language speakers a lot, it’s recommended to have a language translator on you. Aside from being easy to use, it also helps you conserve your smartphone’s battery.

But if you rarely travel, your smartphone should be enough. Just be sure to download all the data files you need to avoid getting struck with roaming data charges.

Is it ‘traveling’ or ‘travelling’?

What to Know When it comes to spelling the forms of the verb travel , traveled and traveling are more common in the U.S., and travelled and travelling are dominant everywhere else.

Spelling is typically clear-cut in modern English: forty unfailingly betrays four ; the sweet treat after dinner is spelled dessert , not desert .

But some words have two forms that appear often enough in edited text to make it clear that something else is going on. And so it is with forms of the verb travel : traveled and travelled , and traveling and travelling .

woman looking at departures board

It might have a different spelling wherever you're going.

One or Two L 's?

If you look at where the single l forms originate and where the double l forms originate a pattern emerges: in the United States, traveled and traveling predominate, and everywhere else travelled and travelling are preferred.

The reason mostly comes down to one man we at Merriam-Webster hold especially dear: Noah Webster. Our lexicographical father (brothers George and Charles Merriam bought the rights to Noah Webster’s 1841 dictionary after Webster died) was a great believer in spelling reform and wanted English spelling to make more sense—and if the English of his homeland had more logic to it than its British parent, so much the better. He decided that travel needed only one l in its past and present participle forms.

Webster’s logic is the reason behind the spelling of canceled and cancelled as well: in the U.S., they have just one l , but elsewhere two l ’s are the norm.

American English Words that Use 2 L 's

Webster didn’t think all double l ’s needed to be reduced to one, however: in cases in which the accent, or emphasis, is on the syllable with the l , two l ’s are preserved: expelled and expelling ; controlled and controlling ; patrolled and patrolling .

Shruthi Kumar ’24, Senior English Address: “The Power of Not Knowing”

Amid divisions and uncertainties, finding “space for empathy, solidarity, and a willingness to listen”.

Return to main article:

Law School graduates in black caps and gowns cheer

As prepared for delivery. For Kumar’s additional remarks, please read the accompanying article .

The Power of Not Knowing

Today, we are celebrated for what we know. In fact, for most of our lives, we’ve learned to feel a sense of accomplishment from the awards, accolades, and honors that lined our childhood homes. How much we knew and how we leveraged it got us far. It got us here. But today, I want to convince you of something counterintuitive that I’ve learned from the Class of 2024: the power of not knowing.

I grew up in the Great Plains of Nebraska alongside cattle ranches and cornfields. As the eldest daughter of South Asian immigrants, I was the first in my family to go to college here in the US. There was a lot I didn’t know. When it came time, I asked my parents how to apply to colleges. They too said, “I don’t know.”

The words “I don’t know” used to make me feel powerless. Like there was no answer, and therefore, no way. As if I was admitting defeat.

From Nebraska to Harvard, I found myself redefining this feeling of not knowing. I discovered a newfound power in how much I didn’t know. I didn’t know a field called the “History of Science” even existed. I now find myself a graduate of the Department. In my freshman year of college, for the first time in my life, I was taught by a professor of color. A Historian of Science who made clear to me that history is just as much about the stories we don’t know as the stories we do.

In the History of Science, we often look for what is missing. What documents are not in the archives and whose voices are not captured in history? I’ve learned silence is rarely empty, often loud. What we don’t know can sometimes tell the most powerful story.

I learned this not only in the classroom, but also from the Class of 2024. In reflecting on our collective journey at Harvard, I’ve learned it's often the moments of uncertainty from which something greater than we could have ever imagined grows. Our class has experienced more than our fair share of the unknown.

Our first year, during COVID, we didn’t have Annenberg to meet 100 people in an hour and walk out remembering 5 names. We didn’t know what starting Harvard in the middle of a global pandemic would be like. So what did we do?Jefe’s became the new Annenberg, and we learned, in the midst of uncertainty, to connect differently, building quality over quantity in our friendships. In our sophomore year, Roe v. Wade was overturned and there was and still is, in many parts of the country, an omnipresent uncertainty in accessing reproductive healthcare. In our junior year, Harvard faced the Supreme Court and the decision to reverse affirmative action. Whether we realize it or not, we have been swimming in uncharted waters.

Which brings me to our senior year, a year on campus that has been marked by enormous uncertainty. In the fall, my name and identity alongside other black and brown students at Harvard was publically targeted. For many of us, students of color, doxxing left our jobs uncertain, our safety uncertain, our well-being uncertain.

Now, we are in a moment of intense division and disagreement in our community over the events in Gaza. I see pain, uncertainty, and unrest across campus. It’s now, in a moment like this, that the power of “not knowing” becomes critical.

Maybe we don’t know what it’s like to be ethnically targeted. Maybe we don’t know what it's like to come face to face with violence and death. But, we don’t have to know.

Solidarity is not dependent on what we know, because “not knowing” is an ethical stance. It creates space for empathy, solidarity, and a willingness to listen.

I don’t know – so I ask. I listen. I believe an important type of learning takes place, especially in moments of uncertainty, when we lean into conversations without assuming we have all the answers. Can we see humanity in people we don’t know? Can we feel the pain of people with whom we disagree?

As we graduate, what we know , our material knowledge, may not matter so much anymore. The truth is, it’s what we don’t know and how we navigate it that will set us apart moving forward.

Uncertainty is uncomfortable. But I encourage you to dive into the deep end of discomfort, and as you do, bring with you a Beginner’s mind, an ethic of not knowing.

As Emily Dickinson had said, “Not knowing when the Dawn will come, I open every Door.”

Thank you, and Congratulations Class of 2024!

For example, everyone who instructs Copilot to create a "recipe for apple pie" is likely to wind up with identical or nearly identical content.

Copilot on Telegram relies on the same safety infrastructure as the Microsoft Copilot experience, which was developed in accordance with Microsoft’s AI Principles, Microsoft’s Responsible AI Standard, and in partnership with responsible AI experts across the company.

Responsible Artificial Intelligence (Responsible AI) is an approach to developing, assessing, and deploying AI systems in a safe, trustworthy, and ethical way. AI systems are the product of many decisions made by those who develop and deploy them. From system purpose to how people interact with AI systems, Responsible AI can help proactively guide these decisions toward more beneficial and equitable outcomes. That means keeping people and their goals at the center of system design decisions and respecting enduring values like fairness, reliability, and transparency.

Microsoft developed a Responsible AI Standard . It's a framework for building AI systems according to six principles: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. For Microsoft, these principles are the cornerstone of a responsible and trustworthy approach to AI, especially as intelligent technology becomes more prevalent in products and services that people use every day.

For more information visit our Responsible AI site .

Copilot is built on Microsoft's comprehensive approach to security, compliance, and privacy. For more information about privacy, please visit: Privacy Statement .

Copilot is like having a research assistant, personal planner, and creative partner at your side whenever you search the web. With this set of AI-powered features, you can:

  • Ask your actual question. When you ask complex questions, Bing gives you detailed replies.
  • Get an actual answer. Copilot looks at search results across the web to offer you a summarized answer and links to its sources.
  • Be creative. When you need inspiration, Copilot can help you write poems or stories.

With the Copilot experience, you can also ask follow-up questions such as, “can you explain that in simpler terms,” or, “give me more options” to get different and even more detailed answers in your search. However, in Copilot, each conversation will have a limited number of interactions, to keep the interactions grounded in search.

Copilot builds on the existing Bing experience to provide you with a new type of search.

  • Beyond generating a list of relevant links, Copilot consolidates reliable sources across the web to give you a single, summarized answer.
  • Search in a way that feels natural to how you talk, text, and think. Copilot takes your complex searches and shares back a detailed response.
  • In the Copilot experience, you can chat naturally and ask follow-up questions to your initial search to get detailed replies.

Copilot can be used as a creative tool. It can help you write poems, stories, or even share ideas for a project.

While Copilot works to avoid sharing unexpected offensive content in search results and has taken steps to prevent its Copilot features from engaging on potentially harmful topics, you may still see unexpected results. We’re constantly working to improve our technology in preventing harmful content.

If you encounter harmful or inappropriate content, please provide feedback, or report a concern by sending /feedback in the chat window of Copilot on Telegram. You can also report your concern here: https://www.microsoft.com/concern/bing

We will continue working with user feedback to provide a safe experience for all.

Copilot aims to base all its responses on reliable sources - but AI can make mistakes, and third-party content on the internet may not always be accurate or reliable. Copilot will sometimes misrepresent the information it finds, and you may see responses that sound convincing but are incomplete, inaccurate, or inappropriate. Use your own judgment and double check the facts before making decisions or taking action based on Copilot’s responses.

To share your feedback or report a concern, refer to the previous FAQ.
