12 of the best luxury train journeys in India

There’s no better way to experience the stunning sights of india than from one of the country’s palatial trains – here are twelve of the best trips.

luxury train journeys in india

W e get it: train travel in India can be a mixed bag, especially if you don’t know where to start. On the one hand, it’s the most affordable way to see the country and the people who make it what it is; and on the other, it can be a staggeringly opulent “Palace on Wheels” (no, really — keep reading.) Nowadays, sleeper trains can be fully functioning luxury hotels — replete with personal butlers, laundry services and on-board spas — plus a few added bonuses; namely jaw-dropping views of everything from palm-fringed coastlines to forested national parks, and insider tours both on and off the tourist trail. Here’s our pick of the best luxury journeys to book.

1. Heritage of India

Best for India first-timers You wouldn’t necessarily think that eight days would be enough to visit most of India’s poster-board attractions, but aboard the country’s most opulent train, the Maharajas’ Express, anything seems possible. You’ll travel from Mumbai to Delhi — via medieval Bikaner, the otherworldly Rajasthani desert and Jodhpur’s cobalt walls — in the sort of splendour that harks back to a bygone era (albeit outfitted with modern creature comforts such as USB sockets). Keep your eyes peeled for Bengal tigers prowling their Ranthambore hunting ground.

2. Treasures of India

Best for the Golden Triangle Make sure your camera’s charged for this three-night round trip from Delhi , ensconced in a glamorous cabin on the Maharajas’ Express; you’ll likely be snapping away throughout. Whether it’s the photogenic interiors of your cabin — all intricately carved wood, gilt and leather finishings and plush textiles — or a visit to some of India’s most famous attractions, including the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, this is an experience you won’t want to forget. You’ll explore the pink city of Jaipur in similar style; with a guided tour of the Amber Fort and a slap-up lunch.

3. Indian Odyssey

Best for families This seven-night trip, beginning in Delhi, is a magnificent way to tick off the Golden Triangle’s biggest hitters before heading to the Maharashtrian coast. You’ll visit the world’s most famous love letter, the Taj Mahal, as well as the Agra Fort, before climbing back aboard for day trips to Jaipur and the lakeside city of Udaipur. Before arriving in Mumbai , you’ll also get the chance to explore the archaeologically rich city of Vadodara — a Unesco-listed site in Gujarat — as well as the Ellora Caves, where temples have been carved into the rock face.

4. Pride of Karnataka

Best for Karnataka This six-night fling around Karnataka — a region so pretty it’s referred to as “The Pride of the South” — is a lot of fun. As part of your round trip aboard the sophisticated Golden Chariot train from Bangalore, you’ll visit Mysore Palace, temples in Hampi and the terracotta-toned caves in Badami, before seeking shelter under swaying palms in sun-drenched Goa . Plus, you won’t have to forgo comfort, returning each evening to everything from laundered clothes to a fully-equipped gym.

5. Jewels of the Deccan

Best for culture This seven-night round trip from Mumbai on the Deccan Odyssey will take you on a whirlwind tour of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. You’ll spend your days exploring Mughal palaces in Bijalpur, shopping in Hyderabad, visiting anything from the ruins in Hampi to the Ajanta Caves and the Gandhi Research Foundation in Jalgaon, and your nights sipping expertly mixed cocktails and dressing up for dinner in the lap of luxury.

6. Palace on Wheels: Golden Triangle, Khajuraho & Varanasi

Best for old-world style This heritage-style train, modestly named Palace on Wheels, feels like it could make a Maharaja (or, indeed, a Maharani) out of anyone; its decor is distinctly old-world and gloved service is the gilded cherry on top. You’ll alight at Delhi for a 14-night trip to spiritual centre Varanasi via culturally significant and less-visited spots (like Old Delhi, Rajasthan’s rugged Aravalli hills and the Thar Desert) as well as all the bucket-list regulars. Expect to mix it up on this guided trip; it incorporates overnight hotel stays and an internal flight.

7. Jewels of the South

Best for South India This six-night sojourn, aboard the opulent Golden Chariot train, does what it says on the tin; takes you around some of South India’s prettiest spots in style. On a round trip from Bangalore you’ll visit three staggeringly beautiful Unesco world heritage sites — Hampi (outside Chennai), Shore Temple in Pondicherry and Brihadeshwara Temple in Thanjavur — before heading to picturesque Cochin and hitting the lush Keralan backwaters on a houseboat in Alleppey.

8. Royal Rajasthan on Wheels

Best for a trip back in time This old-world Palace on Wheels route is a great way to explore bygone Rajasthan; it’s a seven-night round trip from Delhi that focuses on the royalty and majesty of the region. Expect guided tours of lakeside palaces in Udaipur and the imposing forts of Jaipur and Jodhpur, visits to Ranthambore and Keoladeo national parks, dinner at jewel-toned havelis in Jaisalmer, and a trip to the most palatial of them all — the Taj Mahal.

9. Maharashtra Wild Trail Journey

Best for adventure This eight-day tour is an alternative for those wanting to explore a different side to Maharashtra, a state that’s rich with architecture, culture and almost otherworldly nature. You’ll visit the protected Pench National Park, the Bengal tiger reserve at Tadoba and both the Ajanta and Ellora caves, as well as India’s wine capital Nashik — all the while cosseted in refined glamour aboard the Deccan Odyssey.

10. Steam Express: Fairy Queen

Best for train buffs The word “heritage” is thrown around often these days, but in this case it’s justified — the Fairy Queen is the oldest rolling locomotive in the world. There are only two carriages, so its 50 passengers stay overnight at a hotel along the two-day route from Delhi through Alwar and Rewari — near the Sariska wildlife sanctuary, where tiger safaris are available — and enjoy cultural activities during the days.

11. Glimpses of Karnataka

Best for a quick journey This three-night round trip from Bangalore is a whirlwind tour of picturesque Karnataka. Passengers will hit the region’s most famous spots — including a safari at Bandipur National Park, a tour of the imposing Mysore Palace and a visit to Unesco world heritage site Hampi — while enjoying the amenities of the regal Golden Chariot, which include double beds, personal butlers and an on-board spa.

12. Indian Panorama

Best for couples An unforgettable route, this six-night round-trip from Delhi aboard the lavish Maharajas’ Express will make you wish you’d freed up more space in your camera roll. The aptly named Indian Panorama provides exactly that; jaw-dropping views of some of the country’s most famous sights. You’ll gawp at the Taj Mahal, bathe at the ghats on the banks of the Ganges at holy city Varanasi, spot Bengal tigers at Ranthambore and see the sacred monuments at Unesco heritage site Khajuraho — and plenty more. It’s a trip of a lifetime.

Explore India on a Luxury Tourist Train

luxury train journeys in india

Have some cash to splash? Tours on luxury trains in India are an excellent way to explore the country without having to compromise on comfort. These luxury trains, which offer every indulgence imaginable right down to customized cutlery, inject glamor and romance into seeing some of India's best tourist attractions.

The luxury trains generally run from September to April each year. You can expect to pay around $9,000 for two people, for seven nights (there are often discounted rates, especially for Indian citizens). It's definitely not cheap! All meals, tours, and entrance fees to monuments and cultural sites are included in the price though. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the regal experience. Travel at night and explore new destinations during the day! Here are the options.

Palace on Wheels

The Palace on Wheels is the oldest and most iconic of India's luxury trains. It's been operating since 1982 and is rated as one of the best train journeys in the world. The train's seven-night itinerary includes some of the most popular cities in Rajasthan, as well as the Taj Mahal.

The Palace on Wheels received a makeover in 2017 using the carriages from the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels, which ceased operating. These carriages are more spacious and luxurious than the train's previous ones, and they've been refurbished to recreate the feel of the Palace on Wheels. New facilities include a Royal Spa and modern amenities. The train's exterior has also been painted a cream color.

The old carriages of the Palace on Wheels were used to launch a more affordable Heritage Palace on Wheels luxury train in late December 2017. Unfortunately, the train failed to attract enough passengers though.

Deccan Odyssey

The Deccan Odyssey primarily covers Maharashtra, as well as popular destinations in neighboring states such as Goa, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. This luxury train has been operating since 2004 and offers six diverse seven-night itineraries, most of which depart from Mumbai . These are the Maharashtra Splendor (covers Ajanta Ellora caves , Nashik wineries , Kolhapur, Konkan Coast and Goa), the Indian Odyssey (departs from Delhi and travels through Agra, Ranthambore National Park , Jaipur, Udaipur, and Vadodara, to the Ellora caves in Maharashtra), the Jewels of the Deccan (heads south to Hampi and Hyderabad ), the Maharashtra Wild Trail (includes Pench and Tadoba national parks), Hidden Treasures of Gujarat, and Indian Sojourn (similar to the Indian Odyssey but departs from Mumbai and ends in Delhi).

Maharajas' Express

The opulent Maharajas' Express was introduced by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation in 2010 as the only luxury train in India to travel across the whole country. It has consistently won the  Leading Luxury Train of the World Award. There are five main tour circuits to choose from, with an emphasis on North India. Two are short three-night Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and Ranthambore) tours and the other three are seven-night voyages. In addition, two Southern Sojourn tours have been introduced, focusing on South India. However, these only operate in September. The train is priced higher than other luxury trains, with rates starting from around $12,000 for two people, for seven nights.

Golden Chariot

After undergoing refurbishment, the Golden Chariot is scheduled to recommence running on March 22, 2020. The only luxury train to operate exclusively in South India, the Golden Chariot gets its name from the stone chariot in historic Hampi, one of the places it visits in Karnataka. The train started running in early 2008, and currently only operates on one route known as the six-night "Pride of the South" tour encompassing Karnataka and Goa. The tour departs from Bangalore and visits Bandipur National Park, Mysore, Halebidu, Chikmangalur, Hampi , Badami-Pattadakal-Aihole, and Goa.

India's best train trips are a journey to the soul of the subcontinent

Passengers board trains at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji MaharajTerminus

Traveling by train in India is an intense, exhilarating experience © Tuul & Bruno Morandi / Getty Images

No trip to India would be complete without a ride on one of the country's 13,000 daily passenger trains. India's railways are the lifeblood of the nation – the veins and arteries that keep the country’s heart beating, snaking into nooks and crannies that no plane could ever reach, and keeping 1.38 billion people connected with friends and family.

From 10-minute commuter hops to epic four-day journeys across the subcontinent, there’s a train ride to suit every travel need and every budget. Penny-priced local trains transport millions across big cities such as Delhi , Kolkata and Mumbai , while lavish luxury locos offer the chance to roll around the country in style.

Passengers squeeze into an Indian train at Gwalior

With the windows down and doors flung open, India's trains offer a peek into the everyday workings of Indian life, crawling through dusty villages, winding up the lush slopes of forest-clad mountains and skimming beautiful coasts, bringing visitors within touching distance of drying laundry and coconut groves.

Onboard, you’ll find a microcosm of Indian society spread across eight different classes, from politicians and businessmen living it up in air-conditioned compartments to laborers sitting cross-legged on simple wooden benches. Affordable and relatively easy to book online, trains are also the most atmospheric way to explore India . Traveling by train is also a smart way to save money on hotels, with comfortable sleeper services connecting major cities nightly and meals often included in the ticket price.

Whether you're a committed rail enthusiast, or just dipping in a toe for the experience, here are the best train journeys in India.

The Deccan Odyssey

Best luxury journey.

Start – New Delhi; End – Mumbai; Distance – 1524km (947 miles); Duration – 7 nights 8 days

Standing out amongst the thousands of passenger trains that traverse the country every day, India's luxury trains roll languorously between major cities, their polished engines and gleaming livery glinting in the sun. For those who can afford it, it's the only way to travel.

Rail aficionados sing the praises of the extravagant Maharajas’ Express , which comes with personal butlers, bejeweled dinner plates and onboard bathtubs, but a more affordable option is the Deccan Odyssey . This luxe service runs from the Indian capital to Ranthambore National Park , the Taj Mahal in Agra and Jaipur and Udaipur , continuing to Vadodara and the World Heritage Sites of Ellora and Ajanta before arriving in Mumbai eight days later.

Less a train ride, more a cruise on wheels, this elegant train rumbles through the night, with passengers waking in a brand new city every day, to be met by coaches offering local tours. However, it’s perfectly acceptable to sit out the organized excursions and explore by yourself on foot or by taxi, or just pull out a paperback and enjoy the peace and quiet on board.

Mandovi Express

Best all-round rail experience.

Start – Mumbai CST; End – Madgaon Junction; Distance – 581km (361 miles); Duration – 11hrs 50mins

With the Sahyadri Hills rising on the left and the Arabian Sea sparkling on the right, the Konkan Railway is a textbook example of Indian railway engineering excellence. Flash floods, landslides and collapsed tunnels all failed to hinder the construction of this trunk line from Mumbai's famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj station (CST) to the beaches of Goa .

While numerous trains weave along this coastal route, the Mandovi Express stands out as a national treasure thanks to its scenic views and the legions of hawkers who wander the aisles vending freshly fried pakoras (vegetable fritters), hot samosas (fried savory pastries) and biryani in clay pots.

Eschew the air-conditioned carriages with tinted windows that obscure the views, and opt for a seat in third or general class, where a warm salty breeze wafts through the bars of open windows. With no glass between you and the scenery, you’ll get the best out of the experience, as the train navigates more than 2000 bridges and 92 tunnels, with coconut trees bending in the foreground and rivers gushing beneath the sleepers.

Darjeeling Toy Train

Best for families and steam enthusiasts.

Start – New Jalpaiguri; End – Darjeeling; Distance – 84km (52 miles); Duration – 7hrs 20mins

Since the late 19th century, this dainty little "toy train" has been trundling slowly uphill to the Bengali hill station of Darjeeling . Seven hours after leaving the base of the hills, this pint-sized loco wails arrives in a cloud of steam and dark smoke, offering a trip back to an earlier century. Trucks and carts creep to a halt to allow the train to wind across Hill Cart Road, where the carriages glide so close to shop fronts that you can almost reach out and touch the piles of apples.

Built by the British colonial government, the railway was originally used to transport tea and rice down to the plains, but it’s now Unesco World Heritage listed and more commonly packed with holidaying families singing Hindi movie songs and cheering at particularly thrilling sections of track such as the Batasia Loop.

Every day, the train zig-zags uphill from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) through thick groves of bamboo and pine, working its way around rich green tea plantations before hooting into Darjeeling. The main service is usually pulled by a diesel engine, but two-hour joy rides chug from Darjeeling to Ghum and back tugged by steam locos. On a clear day, you may even spot the sun-kissed summit of  8586m (28,169 ft) Mt Khangchendzonga hovering on the horizon.

The toy train rolls into Darjeeling Railway Station

The Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express

Best train ride for serious rail enthusiasts.

Start – Dibrugarh; End – Kanniyakumari; Distance – 4154km (2581 miles); Duration: 74hrs 35mins

Leaving once a week on Saturdays, this is one epic train ride, taking passengers from Upper Assam in the northeast corner of the country all the way to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu , at the southernmost tip of India – the point where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. Making 57 stops in eight different states, this multi-day odyssey is a deep immersion into the verve and spirit of India's railways.

For the perfect combination of charm and comfort, book into a 2AC sleeper carriage – with open, four-berth compartments – and lie between clean white sheets watching students playing cards, mothers rocking babies in cradles tied from saris, and friends chatting over hot vadas (lentil-flour fritters) and endless cups of chai (sweet Indian tea). Take the opportunity to stroll up and down the 16 carriages to experience a microcosm of Indian society, and keep plenty of small denomination notes to hand for snacks, as hawkers rarely have change for big bills.

Island Express

Best for a quick taste of the indian rail experience.

Start – Thiruvananthapuram; End – Kanniyakumari; Distance – 87km/54 miles; Duration – 3hrs 20mins

By Indian standards, the Island Express is barely a local hop, but it’s a magical trip that takes passengers into the dewy depths of Kerala . For less than a dollar, passengers can stake out a window seat on this quiet country service that squeezes through the backwaters between Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, passing villages of sugar-pink houses and tiny whitewashed churches.

Waterlogged paddy fields roll by, skinny palms bend as if bowing, and the steam from the kitchens of trackside houses drifts through the open doors. You’ll want to sit right up against the windows (or in the open doorways) to snap photos of children playing street cricket, elderly men in dhotis (white sarongs) smoking rolled-leaf cigarettes and bullock carts rumbling alongside the rail tracks. Just watch out for the stray branches that thwack against the sides of the train, leaving broken twigs scattered up the aisles and tiny flowers scattered underfoot.

Pune–Hazrat Nizamuddin Duronto Express

Best train trip for a first-time overnight ride.

Start – Pune; End – New Delhi; Distance – 1515km (941 miles); Duration – 19hrs 35mins

India’s sleeper trains vary widely when it comes to levels of comfort, with many services creeping along at a snail's pace and stopping noisily at local stations through the night – a definite hindrance to sleep! However, Duronto Express trains only stop at a tiny number of stations en route, using some of the country’s fastest trains, and they offer excellent meals and high standards of onboard service.

Recognizable by their bright green and yellow color scheme, these sleek and modernized trains are perfect for first-time night-riders looking to sample the Indian railway experience without the rough edges. Departing Pune just after 11am every day, the train speeds past rushing rivers, stretches of deserts, small mountains and serene villages.

There's much excitement in the middle of the day as lunch arrives on red plastic trays. Expect tomato soup with a breadstick and butter followed by foil-wrapped chapatis, steamed rice, dal, chicken curry, yogurt and pickles – and a small tub of vanilla ice cream for dessert. The meals loaded in Pune are the tastiest of the ride, but you'll also get a satisfying dinner and breakfast before rolling into Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin station, close to Humayun's Tomb .

My special lady friend wants to take me in a luxury train for my 50th bday, late 2019. Her parents, who now are in their 70s, live in Canada, near her. They emigrated from Calcutta when they were married. I live in the US. Suggestions? Hopefully romantic, but she makes Everything romantic, even if it isn’t already. Thank you.

Palace on Wheels carriage

Luxury train journeys through India

Palace on wheels.

By Audley India specialist Alison

Living and working in Mumbai for a number of years, I spent weekends exploring my surroundings by hopping on local trains, sleeper trains and toy trains. In a country that relies on its rail network like no other, it’s little surprise that a range of luxury trains is available for you to tour India from a different perspective.

Choosing to travel in India by luxury train

Luxury train journeys through India

India specialist Alison singles out some of India’s best luxury trains and explains why they’re an enjoyable way to explore the country.

Join a luxury train tour across India, and you’ll cover more ground than you could by car. You’ll be able to visit far more places and, as most trains travel during the night, won’t feel rushed.

Tours and activities are usually conducted in small groups, and dinners are enjoyed together with your fellow passengers. I’d agree that this wouldn’t suit the more independently minded, but if you’re keen for a little more privacy, some trains provide complimentary private tours if you book a suite or presidential cabin.

Luxury trains in India

The maharajas' express.

The Maharajas' Express train

Completing its maiden journey in 2010, the Maharajas' Express  is the newest and, in my opinion, most luxurious train running in India. Cabins range from the well-sized deluxe to suites with their own private sitting area. There’s even a presidential suite pulled in its own carriage.

Teak doors separate your cabin from the corridor, and rooms are decorated with Indian prints and brass trim. Beds are positioned along the length of the train — I could hardly feel any movement as I slept.

The majority of meals are eaten on board. Almost everything, from the croissants at breakfast to the handmade chocolates at dinner, is made from scratch. As we sat down to each meal, the head chef, John Stone, would make his way down the carriage, talking to guests about the food and explaining the finer points of some of the Indian dishes. Hailing from Shimla , he likes to include dishes popular with his family on the comprehensive continental menu.

Maharajas' Express train routes

Taj Mahal, Agra

Five different routes all focus on the northern state of Rajasthan and its surrounding areas, with journeys ranging from three to six nights. I experienced the shortest tour: Treasures of India. Taking just three nights, it’s an ideal taste of luxury train travel without committing to the cost of the longer tours.

I was driven from my Delhi hotel to Safdarjung Railway Station in the southern suburbs of the city. Joining my fellow guests on board, brunch was served as the train set off past housing blocks strung with bright lines of washing and green patches of park. Our first stop was Agra.

It’s difficult to miss the Maharajas' Express as it pulls into a station. Its cherry-red body is decorated with gold patterns, and it’s by far the cleanest train. As it arrived into Agra , local musicians announced our arrival on the platform. I stepped off onto a red carpet to receive a welcoming flower garland. This, I was told, is the protocol for every stop.

Coaches branded with the train’s insignia are the mode of transport for touring Agra. Tours are in groups, but you have headphones to listen to the guide, who speaks through a microphone.

The first day in Agra focuses on visiting its calling card, the Taj Mahal. After an early start and a guided tour, you have time to take photographs and relax in the surrounding gardens.

You go back to the train for lunch, then set out again in the afternoon to tour Agra Fort, home of the Mughal emperors. It’s possible to stand where Shah Jahan, the creator of the Taj Mahal, was imprisoned by his son, within view of his masterpiece. You then return to the train for dinner, and depart for Ranthambhore National Park.

From the train, we drove by 4x4 into the park. We’d been warned that the tigers in Ranthambhore were elusive, and we’d be lucky to glimpse a dash of tail. While we were peering into the bushes at a sambar deer, a female tiger casually walked out in front of us. Everyone suddenly went silent as we watched her nonchalantly survey her territory.

Amber Fort

You close your cabin curtains that evening on scraggly jungle and open them the next morning to a cityscape crammed with flat-topped apartments and open-faced shops: Jaipur .

It’s a jeep ride up to Amber Fort, overlooking the surrounding Aravalli Hills. The tour of the fort guides you through a maze of palace rooms and courtyards, culminating in a visit to the Sheesh Mahal, or ‘chamber of mirrors’. This room is covered by so many gems, mirrors and pieces of painted glass it can be lit by a single candle.

The Express’s itineraries include exclusive experiences it wouldn’t be possible to book otherwise. In Jaipur, we were granted access to Jaipur’s royal family’s private quarters of the City Palace. Entertainment was provided in the gardens before we were taken up to their rooftop terrace for a dinner with views across the city. I managed to glimpse at a few royal rooms along the way.

On the final morning, you awake in Delhi to disembark after a substantial breakfast. The Express’s routes begin or end in Delhi but don’t usually include visiting any of its sites. Although it’s noisy and chaotic, I wouldn’t discount spending a few nights in Delhi before you catch the train. A guided city tour will give a taster of what’s to come.

The bar on board the Palace on Wheels

The Palace on Wheels  feels a little dated, but that’s part of its charm. One of the first luxury trains dedicated to leisure — those that came before were for royalty or dignitaries — it started running in 1982. The General Manager then is still running the train now. On my first night aboard, we were given a short talk on the history of the train: as a passenger, there’s a real sense of becoming part of its heritage.

The train is made up of 14 saloon coaches, each named after a place on the route. On the coach named Kishangarh, a village noted for its Bani Thani miniature paintings, local artists have painted examples of their work. There are also two restaurants, a lounge car and four service cars for staff.

Four cabins fit into each saloon and share a small lounge. Two valets are assigned to each saloon — Opi and Rasjish who looked after me were always keen to recommend their pick of the day’s menu. The deluxe cabins are clad in polished teak and have sash windows and wall hangings. Upgrade to the presidential suite and you’ll also get a private sitting area.

Palace on Wheels route

View from the Victory Tower, Chittorgarh

Departing every Wednesday, the Palace on Wheels follows a set seven night route across north India. For me, the range of wildlife, key highlights and more offbeat rural areas it covers makes it one of the most comprehensive insights into India. Journeying long distances as you sleep, the train halves the amount of time it would take to complete this trip by car.

Arriving at Delhi Railway Station, I boarded the train in the evening, ready for dinner. Food is a white-gloved, silver-service affair. Service can feel a little slow, but this doesn’t seem to matter when you’re surrounded by gilded mirrors and printed wallpaper. With set dining times, you’ll eat alongside your fellow guests each night.

The first few days of the route, visit the fortress city of Jaipur and Ranthambhore National Park . The train then delves further into Rajasthan, starting with Chittorgarh , a fortress town built by the Rajputs, a prominent Indian ruling family.

Look at a map and you’ll find that Chittorgarh is surrounded by nothing but the odd tiny hamlet. A long drive from the nearest city and with only a couple of very basic hotels, it’s rarely visited. After touring the fort — the largest in India — we settled down to watch the evening’s sound and light show. The fort walls are lit with a succession of moving lights as a voice narrates the history of Chittorgarh.

After dinner on board, the train then continues south to Udaipur . A greener city, Udaipur is set around two lakes, protected by the Aravalli Hills. The Lake Palace sits in the middle of Lake Pichola, a once pleasure palace for a young Mughal prince. It’s now one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. It isn’t usually possible to visit unless you stay at the hotel, but as train passengers we had the opportunity to dine there.

The blue city of Jodhpur as seen from Mehrangarh Fort

The fortress city of Jaisalmer , which marks the gateway to the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, has no airport and is a dusty seven-hour drive from the nearest city. As part of the Palace on Wheels route, you wake there after an overnight ride from Udaipur. Jaisalmer’s fort is the only lived-in example in India, and a guided tour takes you past local schools, temples and shops squeezed in between the military and palace buildings.

The train then begins its journey back toward Delhi, stopping in Jodhpur , India’s blue city, before heading onward to Bharatpur . Here you’ll visit Ghana National Park , flourishing wetlands that protect thousands of nesting birds. It’s a key route for migratory birds, and you’ll often see Sarus cranes, egrets and waterfowl.

The train’s finale is a visit to Agra and the Taj Mahal, before returning you to Delhi.

The Deccan Odyssey

The Deccan Odyssey train

The Maharashtra Tourist Board conceived the Deccan Odyssey train as a way to encourage visitors to explore alternative, less-visited parts of India. States such as Maharashtra and the Deccan in central India were difficult to travel through, even for the most determined, with few hotels, guides or roads. Setting up a train service swiftly solved the problem.

Running since 2004, the train has been fully refurbished recently. Its light, airy cabins are now furnished with locally sourced fabrics. You’ll find the wooden furniture, under close scrutiny, is veneered rather than carved wood, but everything is clean and fresh. There are two dining cars, a lounge, a spa and a small gym.

Two deluxe cabins occupy each car, with a butler per car providing a personal service. The service on board is very attentive — I enjoyed tea in my cabin each morning — and you’re given a mobile phone preloaded with your butler’s number.

I couldn’t fault the food served on board, enjoying racks of lamb, a traditional Indian thali and far too many desserts. The dishes are beautifully presented, and the chefs take a real pride in their cooking, walking along the dining cars to check how their dishes have been received.

Deccan Odyssey routes

Market day, Gujarat

Each of the Deccan Odyssey’s six routes is focused on a hard-to-travel-in part of India. The seven-night Central India route is by far the most leisurely way to reach the remote ancient monuments at Hampi. But, it’s the seven-night Hidden Treasures of Gujarat route which particularly appeals, as it journeys from Mumbai into the rarely visited northwest state of Gujarat.

Touring through Gujarat, you won’t cross big-name sites off your list, but you will see a part of India that has changed very little. In this predominantly tribal state, you’ll be welcomed into the villages of the Agarias and Rabari tribes. Little is known about these farming communities who live on the outskirts of the Rann of Kutch, the largest salt marsh in the world and an otherworldly glowing white landscape stretching as far as you can see.

The salt marsh is slowly being encroached on by the Gir National Park , the last surviving habitat of the Asiatic lion. Slightly smaller than their African counterparts, Asiatic lions have a shorter mane and are speckled with black, giving them an almost silvery tone. As part of the train’s tour, you can take a safari into the park to track the lions; although they’re notoriously cautious, sightings are common.

Completing a circular route back to Mumbai, the train stops at Hindu and Jain temple sites as well as workshops where you can see some of the state’s textile production. Gujarat silk is well-known as one of the finest fabrics produced in India, made into sarees hand-woven with intricate patterns and a popular Indian wedding attire.

Extending your trip

South Goa beach

Most of India’s luxury train journeys finish in Delhi or Mumbai, making it easy to extend your trip by jumping on a short flight. If you’re looking for some time to relax, Goa is a direct flight from either city.

You won’t find pristine white-sand beaches but exotic dark-gold sands, dotted with fishing boats, cafés and craft markets. Panjim, now known simply as Goa’s Old Town, was once the capital of the Portuguese Estado da India (State of India). Streets of Portuguese townhouses have been recently restored and painted bright yellow and pink, mango and papaya trees growing out front.

A detailed comparison of the best luxury trains in India

Best luxury train in india feature

This article was first published in March 2018 and updated in December 2019.

Can you think of a better way to explore India than on a Luxury Train ? I cannot. Regal train cars, silverware, butlers, red carpets and royal sights. Luxury trains in India are the epitome of travel in the sub-continent and the best way to see the country, much like the Wes Anderson movie about India Darjeeling Limited, but fancier.

Whether you pick the Maharajas Express train or the Palace of Wheels you are definitely in for a real treat . If you are looking to board the world’s most luxurious trains with the highest level of comfort and for the most affordable prices, read on to find out what the best luxury trains in India are.

The history of luxury trains in India

Onboard the Golden Chariot

Train travel has a long history in India where the tracks were laid by the British over a century ago. With such vast territory and the trade interest of the global powers in the 18th and 19th century firmly on the East, rail tracks were the most efficient and fastest way to move merchandise and spices onto the ships that would take them back to the West.

The first commercial train journey in India connected Bombay with Thane and took off in 1851 although the first train actually ran two years earlier. At the time, the tracks were owned by the the British overseas government or the regional rulers, like for example the Maharaja of Jodhpur.

Nationalisation began in 1925 and was fully completed after independence, when the government took over all of the remaining lines and re-structured them creating new ones and regrouping or laying new tracks in portions that were then in newly created Pakistan.

The Golden Chariot exterior

Today, as indicated by the Indian Railways knowledge portal , “the Indian Railways manage 65,436 kilometers of tracks, employ 1.3 million people and runs around 19,000 trains daily, of which more than 12,000 are passenger trains, serving 8.4 billion passengers every year”.

So what about luxury trains in India , how did it all start?

The first luxury train to start operations in India was the Palace on Wheels in 1982 which is why most people who have heard of luxury trains in the country will immediately tell you about The Palace on Wheels and may have never heard of any of the others. However, palace on Wheels is not the most luxurious , The Maharajas Express is definitively the most exclusive and highest end luxury train in India although Palace on Wheels was renovated in 1999 and revamped in 2017 again.

Today, there are four luxury trains covering India :

  • The Maharajas Express
  • The Palace on Wheels
  • The Golden Chariot
  • The Deccan Odyssey

The best luxury trains in India

Although all the Indian luxury trains are similar in a lot of ways, they are not entirely the same so let’s take a look at each of them first then with a comparison of all the luxury trains in India .

Palace on Wheels

The Palace on Wheels is the oldest and first luxury train in India and is a collaboration between the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and Indian Railways .

Palace on Wheels Dining

The train was launched in 1982 as a means to promote the state of Rajasthan by putting back to use the carriages of the rulers of princely states of Rajputana, Gujarat, the Nizam of Hyderabad and the Viceroy of British India whose trains were abandoned after Independence.

The train was subsequently renovated in 1996 when ensuite bathrooms were added and revamped again in 2017 with new carriages being added with larger suites .

The Palace on Wheels luxury train is the best known of all the luxury trains in India although not the most luxurious. It has been awarded a lot of accolades and is renowned the world over.

Cabin categories and facilities onboard the Palace on Wheels

Palace on Wheels cabin

Although the original Palace on Wheels has only one category of cabin, the revamped one also includes a second category of Super Deluxe cabins which are larger and have double beds.

These cabins also come with their own driver and guide so guests do not have to join the group bus. This was previously only offered on the Maharajas Express .

Palace on Wheels Restaurant

Onboard, there are two restaurants and one lounge car, a spa and a small gym . Food served is thali style with six small bowls filled with protein of vegetables served with pickles, rice, poppadoms and breads.

Routes and itineraries on the Palace on Wheels

Routes of the Palace on Wheels are usually 7 nights long , departing and returning to Delhi, but you can also buy tickets from Delhi to Jodhpur only for 5 nights. The traditional route covers most of Rajasthan, as it did from its launch.

The itinerary of the Palace on Wheels starts in Delhm, Jaipur , Ranthambhore (which is where people come for an Asian safari to see the endangered Bengal Tiger ), Chittorgarh, Udaipur , Jaisalmer, Jodhpur , Bharatphur, Agra, Delhi.

Check out this review of the Palace on Wheels by Love and Road.

You can also read about the best places to stay in Jaipur ( like Amanbagh ) , Udaipur (like Shiv Niwas Palace ) , or Jodhpur ; and our travel guides to Jaipur , Jodhpur , Udaiper and Jaisalmer .

Maharajas Express

Maharajas Express at night

The Maharajas Express is the epitome of luxury train travel in India . It is the most exclusive and luxurious of all the four luxury trains and offers real comfort in its premium cabins, especially the Presidential Suite which includes two bedrooms and occupies an entire car. The premium category cabins are unique to the Maharajas Express although the newly revamped Palace on Wheels also has a higher category room.

I traveled on the Maharajas Express journey from Mumbai to Delhi a few years ago and it was one of the most fabulous trips I have ever undertaken. You can read some of the things which surprised me with these facts about the Maharajas Express and these extravagant Maharajas Express experiences .

That itinerary is highly recommended as it provides the main highlights of what is India’s most beautiful state all while enjoying true regal hospitality that only a luxury train in India can provide.

The Maharajas Express may not have been the first luxury train in India but it certainly is the most awarded . It has received several accolades and been covered in major publications and for good reason, as it is an exclusive way to explore the country .

The Maharajas Express is owned and managed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited ( IRCTC ), the tourist arm of the Indian railway company, a government owned entity.

Cabin categories and facilities onboard the Maharajas Express

Maharajas Express cabin

The Maharajas Express has four cabin categories . The Deluxe cabins have double beds and are 120 square feet. They can also be set as twin share.

The Junior Suites are 150 square feet and can also be set as twin or double. They are larger than the deluxe cabins.

Suites are 220 square feet and have their own minibars, lounges with desk tables and sofas and a bathtub, that’s right, a bathtub onboard a luxury train ! Suites have their own private transport and guides when on tour.

Bath in the Maharajas Express

Lastly, the largest of all the cabins in any luxury train in the world . The Presidential Suite onboard The Maharajas Express is real decadence. They are 440 square feet and come with two rooms and bathrooms, so they are perfect for families. The Presidential Suite also has a lounge area , a personal butler and dedicated any language private guide and car for the daily tours.

Maharajas Express restaurant car

The train has two restaurant cars, two bars, a shop, a gym and a spa . Prices start at $3,850 for the shorter 3 night trips and $5,850 for the 7 night trips per person sharing and can go all the way up to $27,000 for the Presidential Suite accommodating 4 people.

  • Trivandrum – Chettinad –Mahabalipuram – Mysore – Hampi – Goa – Ratnagiri -Mumbai

The itineraries from Mumbai to Delhi or viceversa are some of the best ways to see Rajasthan and they are exactly what I experienced on that first trip to India. I loved visiting the Tipu Sultan Summer Palace in Mysore as well as the extravagant Mysore Palace .

Deccan Odyssey

Deccan Odyssey at sunset

The Deccan Odyssey train is focused mostly on the Maharashtra State of India of which Mumbai is the capital and is managed by a joint venture between Cox & Kings and the Indian Railway Corporation, IRTC.

As mentioned before, the first ever train departed from Mumbai and that is also where the central railway authority of India is based, so it is an historic part of India . The Deccan Odyssey offers a different route to some of the other trains with interesting stops like the vineyards of Nashik or the beaches of Goa.

Cabin categories and facilities onboard the Deccan Odyssey

Cabin on the Deccan Odyssey

The Deccan Odyssey has 21 coaches and 11 of them are dedicated to the guest cabins. There are two restaurants, a bar car, a spa and a gym and there is even a conference cabin for your business needs.

Routes and itineraries on the Deccan Odyssey

The team on the Deccan Odyssey

The Deccan Odyssey has a few varied routes covering very different parts of the country, some of which start and end in Mumbai while others end on Delhi. This is the list of journeys:

  • Treasures of Gujarat : Mumbai, Vadodara, Palitana, Sasan Gir, Little Rann of Kutch, Modhera, Patan, Nashik, Mumbai
  • Maharashtra Splendour : Mumbai, Nashik, Ellora Caves, Ajanta Caves, Kolhapur, Goa, Sindhudurg, Mumbai
  • Indian Sojour : Mumbai, Vadodara, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Agra, Sawai Madhopur, Jaipur, Delhi
  • Jewels of the Deccan : Mumbai, Bijapur, Aihole and Pattadakal, Hampi, Hyderabad, Ellora Caves, Ajanta Caves, Mumbai
  • Indian Odyssey : Delhi, Sawai Madhopur, Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Vadodara, Ellora Caves, Mumbai
  • Maharashtra Wild Trail : Mumbai, Aurangabad, Ramtek-Pench, Tadoba, Ajanta Caves, Nashik, Mumbai

Itinerary on the Deccan Odyssey

As you can see, the Deccan Odyssey is a good option if you want to visit some of the remote parts of India which receive few tourists, like Gujarat, or combined some of the most diverse historical trails onboard the Jewels of the Deccan which visits parts as old as Ajanta Caves with Hindu UNESCO listed sites like Hampi or Pattadakal and Mughal strongholds like Hyderabad . This would be an itinerary that would provide very different insights into several historical times in India’s history .

Deccan Odyssey’s wild trail itinerary focuses on wildlife and visits a few of the country’s best wildlife reserves .

Golden Chariot

Golden Chariot Cabin

The Golden Chariot train is owned by a joint-venture between the Karnataka Tourism Authority and the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation ( KSTDC ) and managed by Maple Hotels and Resorts. I loved visiting the gorgeous Temples of Pattadakal in Karnataka .

The train is touted as the only luxury train in the south of India but actually the Maharajas Express also launched two routes in the south in 2017 and the Deccan Odyssey also runs some journeys through some of the southern states. It is true that the Golden Chariot is indeed focused on the south and has the more comprehensive itineraries , plus the teams are firmly anchored in Karnataka .

The train is perhaps the least luxurious of the four luxury trains in India , although it still is perfectly comfortable and luxurious but there are some small details that make it a small notch below the rest. Alcohol is not included in the rates, every deboarding happens independently without the red carpet performances of the Maharajas Express and there are no premium cabins or private car + driver options. These are all elements which do not deter from the experience but provide a slightly more affordable choice.

Cabin categories and facilities onboard the Golden Chariot

The Golden Chariot only has two cabin types , double or twin , both of which are of the same size and are only different in their bedding. The twin cabins can also accommodate three people although given how tight the cabins are they would have to be children not to feel extremely crammed.

Golden Chariot Dining Car

The train has a total of 19 coaches , two restaurants that look almost the same, two kitchens , one cooking Indian food and one cooking Western/International food, a spa, a small gym and one bar .

Routes and itineraries on the Golden Chariot

The Golden Chariot train offers two routes , The Pride of the South covering Karnataka with a day in Goa and the Southern Splendour covering Tamil Nadu (but doesn’t include its capital of Chennai ) and Kerala .

Both routes depart and return on Mondays but are very different in nature and have barely any overlap so you could go on both and have completely separate journeys .

These are the two routes on Golden Chariot.

  • Pride of the South : Bangalore – Mysore – Hassan – Hampi – Badami – Goa – Bangalore
  • Southern Splendour : Bangalore – Puducherry – Mahabalipuram – Tanjavur – Kanyakumari – Kovalam – Alappuzha – Kochi – Bangalore

Rates start at $4,300 for triple sharing and $5,000 per person in double sharing.

See my guides for Kochi , Bangalore and Pondicherry (Puducherry) for further information on what to do in these areas.

How to book the Golden Chariot : For more information you can check the detailed review of my Golden Chariot experience . And this is the official website of the Golden Chariot www.goldenchariot.org

Comparison between the best luxury trains in India – which one is the right for you?

Although the four trains are different in some ways and cover various routes, it may be difficult to decide the right one. So let me help you by simplifying the choice with a comparison table between the best luxury trains in India .

However, you may not decide to choose the right luxury train in India based on the trains themselves as they are all equally luxurious, especially for the entry-level standard cabins.

So perhaps the best way to pick a train would be to look at the itinerary that you are most interested in and this will also depend on what type of traveler you are and how many times you have been to India before.

Let me give you some guidance on who each luxury train in India is good for.

The 9 most scenic train journeys in India

By Tvisha Sharma and Toshita Sahni

Most beautiful train routes in India The 9 most scenic train journeys in India

Air travel may seem more convenient and time-effective, but it cannot replace the undeniable charm of travelling by train. One of the most enjoyable parts of train journeys is sitting by the window and taking in the beauty of the landscape while sipping a hot beverage. In those moments, with hills, forests, brooks and villages rolling by your window, the world slips away, and peace reigns for a little while. If you want to experience this kind of serenity, there are many routes you can take, as India boasts of an extensive railway network. Here’s a look at some of the prettiest train journeys in the country:

Himalayan Queen

Himalayan Queen

Also known as the Kalka-Shimla ‘toy train,’ the Himalayan Queen features in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tracks stretch across the steepest altitude. From your vantage point up high, you will get a glimpse of picturesque pine forests, deep valleys and small towns along the way. This seven-coach train covers a distance of 96km, crossing 82 bridges and 102 tunnels. In 2008, UNESCO added the Kalka-Shimla railway line to its Mountain Railways of India World Heritage site.

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, this train runs from Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling in West Bengal. As you travel at an altitude of more than 2000m, you will be treated to stunning views of sprawling tea plantations and the breathtaking Mt. Kanchenjunga. The route is famous for its loops, where the train turns in a full circle and thus climbs 20ft higher.

Kashmir Valley Railway

On this trip from Jammu to Baramulla, feast your eyes on the snowy mountainscapes of the region. This is actually one of the most challenging tracks built by the Indian Railways. The train passes through many earthquake zones, high-altitude mountain passes and rocky terrains.

Sethu Express

Pamban Bridge

Pamban Bridge

If you don’t want a mountainous journey, choose this train that goes from Chennai to Rameswaram in less than 12 hours. You will get the opportunity to traverse the sea, as the route includes crossing the Pamban Bridge—the second-longest in India—built over the water.  You may recognise it from the 2013 Bollywood film Chennai Express .

This iconic railway line mainly connects Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Get ready to enjoy the varied sights outside your window: the Sahyadri mountains, the Arabian Sea, lakes and waterfalls. A classic choice for travellers going from Mumbai to Goa is the  Mandovi Express . The train travels through 92 tunnels and 2,000 bridges, including the Panvalnadi bridge, which is one of the highest in India. With landscapes covered in lush greenery, a Konkan Railway journey is a treat, especially during the monsoon season.

Goa Express

Goa Express

For an awe-inspiring glimpse of Dudhsagar Falls, take this train from Vasco de Gama in Goa to Londa, Karnataka. It crosses the bridge over that massive waterfall in the early evening, so keep an eye out. The journey is less than 4 hours long and takes you through the charming Western Ghats and serene beaches.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Nilgiri Mountain Railway

If you want to travel by the train where the popular song ‘ Chaiya Chaiya’ was filmed,  choose this one from Mettupalayam to Ooty. You will have lots of time to enjoy the gorgeous views of forests and plantations, as this ‘toy’ train takes around 5h to cover 46km. Considered “the  slowest train  in India”, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway has the steepest gradient of any railway line in South Asia, climbing from an elevation of 325m to 2,240m along the way.

Kollam-Sengottai Chord Line

KollamSengottai Chord Line

For another amazing south Indian experience, take this train from Kollam Junction in Kerala to Sengottai in Tamil Nadu. You will see moss-covered bridges, untouched forests and Kerala’s cardamom hills. The route also takes you over the Pathimoonnu Kannara Bridge, or the 13 Arch Bridge, which is more than 100 years old.

Bhubaneswar to Brahmapur

Bhubaneswar to Brahmapur

Many trains run along this specific route, like the Intercity Express, Prashanti Express, Konark Express and the famous Howrah-Chennai Mail. The most attractive highlight of the journey is Lake Chilika, the second-largest in the country and a popular destination for birdwatchers. As your train passes by, you can often spot different species of birds quenching their thirst in the lake. Don’t forget to sit on the left side of the train going southward to catch the best views.

19 Epic Luxury Train Rides To Add To Your Bucket List

There’s always been something so romantic about taking a train ride.

I’m that person who even gets a kick out of riding on the orange and yellow 1970’s subway in New York City, but I also love seeking out the unique train ride experiences around the world.

From snowy train rides around Yosemite to epic trips through the Scottish Highlands , these are all the luxury train rides to add to your bucket list.

Why Travel By Train?

Luxury train travel is such a unique way to see the world. It’s slower than planes, but lets you soak up the views of the surroundings in a different way than by car.

Railroad travel allows you to dine while soaking up views, make stops in smaller towns not easily accessed by plane travel and channel old-world living.

Plus, fancy train rides are just pure fun. they are a secret passion of mine. Here’s all the best luxury train vacations in the US and the entire world!

19 Top Luxury Trains Around The World To Add To Your Bucket List

1. venice simplon-orient-express, europe.

Yes, the Orient Express is a REAL train! As a huge Agatha Christie fan, I was thrilled to discover the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express . one of the most luxurious train rides in the world goes from London to Venice, with stops in Italy and Paris in between on a route that’s multiple days.

The attention to detail is evident in every corner, from the polished wood paneling to the delicate Art Deco accents in the dining car, it oozes old-school glamour. Food is sourced locally at each stop and made fresh by talented chefs so you can expect delicious meals paired with European views outside your window.

For an unparalleled experience, consider booking the iconic Grand Suite car, known for its marbled en-suite bathrooms, 24 butler, kimono and slippers to take home and luxurious ambiance, offering an unforgettable journey through the heart of Europe in utmost style and comfort.

2. British Pullman, England

The British Pullman, a Belmond train in England , invites passengers to relive the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s in style that happens to look a lot like Wes Anderson. Its meticulously restored carriages boast plush armchairs, polished wood, and intricate marquetry, capturing the essence of a bygone era.

Stopping at various historical spots around England such as Bath (a Unesco world heritage site), York or Canterbury, the train offers scenic routes that showcase the picturesque English countryside, with charming villages and historic landmarks passing by.

Indulgence continues with an emphasis on exceptional dining. Onboard chefs craft gourmet meals ranging from lavish brunches to elegant afternoon teas and exquisite multi-course dinners, all served with attentive care. Each carriage carries its own character, like the elegantly appointed “Audrey” carriage or the “Cygnus” carriage built in the 1950s.

Oh, and there’s a murder mystery luncheon in the dining cars! The British Pullman offers a timeless escape, combining history, luxury, and scenic beauty into an unforgettable journey through England’s past and present.

PS – you can book the train out for private events or things like proposals (just saying). Pullman train trips are famous for a reason.

3. Napa Valley Wine Train, California

If you’re looking for luxury trains in the USA, nothing is more famous in Napa Valley than the Wine Train . As the train winds its way through the picturesque vineyards and rolling hills of Napa, passengers are treated to a sensory journey that encompasses both the taste of exceptional wines and the sight of stunning landscapes.

This rail travel offers a distinctive opportunity to explore multiple wineries along the route, with stops that allow guests to disembark, sample exquisite wines, and learn about the winemaking process from the experts themselves.

I had a chance to ride this a few years ago and loved the history we got while dining on upscale food paired with rolling views of vineyards out the window. This is actually my first luxury train travel experience that got me hooked on these kinds of journeys.

Napa Valley is already a North American bucket list spot, so add this bucket list train to your trip!

4. Cruise Train Seven Stars, Japan

Japan’s Cruise Train Seven Stars is often called the most luxurious train service in the world since it pairs old-world charm with modern Japanese travel technology.

It’s extremely popular, so you have to apply to ride and only winners are selected to experience this small but luxurious train ride through Japan’s mountains and seaside.

But it’s worth the wait. These train cars are drenched in Kanso interior style with a lot of wood and organic elements. There’s a lounge car bar, dining car and a select number of guest suites, as this is an overnight luxury train.

They offer 3 different routes that vary in dates and locations, but again they are all competitive so apply early and cross your fingers.

5. Rovos Rail, South Africa

This train features open-air balconies on the observation car so you can feel the wind in your hair as you chug along the vast landscapes of South Africa.

Drawing inspiration from the allure of the 1932 Marlene Dietrich film “Shanghai Express,” the train’s interiors are a masterpiece of elegance.
